IM Messages

That would be my guess too. Interestingly enough I had another unseen IM message but my session timed out. After I logged back in, it was gone. I suspect the admins are proactively working this. Not that it ever is a good day, but guessing it's a particularly bad day to be an SLS Admin.

Not sure what people expect to get out of this. As soon as the new tab came up I shut it down, as will just about anyone. So whatever they're trying to sell, nobody is buying.

Just a hunch, but both profiles are established users; it seems maybe they were hijacked as well and there is a possible security flaw with the IM using this person(s) to spam others.

Twice it has happened today from two different profiles. The second one automatically hijacked my phone browser and auto opened off site web pages without clicking their links.

Yeah, we got it too.

Interesting. Wonder if it was targeting people in the Forums?

As mentioned to Friendly, I was online early and posted to the Website thread and got an email back from one of the admins saying they were aware of it and turned off the offenders profile. Ironically, the admin also got one of these IMs.

Mayhem, we got one also and I reported it. Also sent you a birdie.

Today I clicked on IM to read a message (NOT A LINK WITHIN A MESSAGE) and it brought me to another site rather than to the IM message itself. The fact that it could even do this may be exposing a potential security issue for this site. I had to exit by killing the tab it created.

I bought up Control Panel just to make sure it didn't install anything and have a recent Restore Point just in case, but figured I'd mention it. I can post or send someone the name of the member that sent me the IM but I suspect this will get deleted if I do that here. Just trying to make the powers that be aware that this happened.

I do like the idea of IM but not if simply clicking to read a message is capable of launching a virus. I do have anti-virus software on my laptop.

The chat window doesn’t pop up anymore, which we find a plus. We’d like the ability to toggle it’s function, but is the red circle with the number in it disrupting your browsing?

I don't know why they removed the on/off feature on the IM....it's now always green when I log on and sometimes I'd like it to be grey so I'm not to be disturbed by IM messages. Don't know why they took that option away from us. Please give it back.

Not sure why, but we’re getting way fewer IM messages with the new format, especially those “Hey, what’s up?” Messaged from single men.

Everyone without a profile pic shows up as the generic gumby couple for us. When I click on them they are all single males.

I guess I didn't realize that an SM could set their profile pic to be the generic couple's gumby one.

Mayhem,

I’ve noticed that sometimes when I change our main profile pic, our thumbnail takes a while to update. Maybe something similar is happening here.

Check back in a day or two and see if the thumbnail has changed.

Just had someone IM me and the thumbnail pic was the generic couple's gumby one, but when I clicked on the actual user, it was a SM with the generic blue gumby pic. How does that happen?

There is a visual indication. A red # showing the number of messages will appear near the IM Messages link. However, this will ONLY update if you refresh the page, so you will still have to be actively doing things in order to even see that. In that respect, the SLS alerts are very much behind the times.

The new IM is easier to use in some ways, and looks better than the old one. But, why isn't there some kind of audio notification when a message comes in? Some kind of 'ding,' so that we new we have a message. We don't sit watching the SLS screen all day waiting for messages. But, if we have the site running in the background, we'd like to know if someone is messaging us. (Oh yeah, and fix it so the message posts when you hit enter, instead of having to grab the mouse every time.)

that7girl, the only concern is that some of us do not want to appear rude. If messages can not get through then we are invisible . This is a lot more like someone leaving a message to me on my voicemail and my stonewalling them. Not a robocall or sales call but someone who has a good reason to expect at least a polite response. Who knows at some future date we may want to contact them and we would be the so and so's who stonewalled them , even though we are unaware of the IM.

Can someone please explain how the IM messages can be any concern, if you do not open the IM?

It has always been possible for people to leave you messages. If you don't use the IM, you never see them. Same as ever.
In that regard, IM is like email. But better than email, your messages are all in one place. More like an actual conversation.

Yes, please update this to allow those who do not want it to turn it off. All those 'hi' messages suck, esp with the 3 clicks each to delete them.

I'm definitely not a fan of the new IM. I always kept the IM off when I was online because it didn't work right on my phone, but my husband would chat once in a while. I'd love a way to turn it off so the "hi" messages would stop.

Once I finally get into a chat with someone it does seem to work better, except the Enter function as noted. Biggest thing I liked about the old chat was the doorbell notification. If they could get that fixed I'd be happy with the new chat. Of course the other big thing would be the ability to turn it off for those that don't use it.

I never heard a single good thing about the old IM, until it was replaced. It often filled up with useless messages about 'left the chat', "returned to the chat" etc.
The new one was much better until they messed up the sending (enter) function

I must say... I am really not a fan of the new IM system. The IM system was never particularly good... but at least it was usable on mobile platforms. This new one seems a step backward. So far the only improvement Ive noticed is that it shows message notifications on the front page (which it never did before).

IM was not broke. some idiot decided to fix it - probably a millenial, totally out of touch with customers. some people who would IM us said they were going to leave sls over it. and since i have not gotten IMs from them, they may have.
