Very interesting about the 255 character rule! Now I know why two messages show in the counter when there is actually only one

I'll log in each day and have nothing in messages. Sometimes if I open messages the new ones show. Other times I have no new ones for days then one pops in that was sent days ago

That makes sense- the message count is usually right when the message is from a SM. Those are usually something like "Hi" or "plz open pics" or "in town want fuck u wifey u watch" or the like.

<p>Messages are stored in 255 character chunks. If someone sends you a message that is 300 characters, it is stored as two messages and your unread counter will show "2". Once you read it, the counter will be decremented by 2. </p>

<p>About 94% of the messages sent are less than 255 characters.</p>

There are a few places I could put this but...

In the past couple of weeks our red message counter occasionally shows more new messages than there are. Usually it's correct but sometimes it shows 1 more, and sometimes it shows 2 more.

I dunno, maybe somebody sends us a message then blocks us before we open it...?

SOMETIMES at least, I know someone sends these messages like they send texts.

Maybe add a picture, hit send.

It shows up as a message from one person, but is, as far as the system is concerned three individual messages from one person.

I have noticed several times that I see a notification of 2 messages, but there is only 1 message in the box.

<p>You're welcome. I believe that what causes this is that someone sent you the messages and then for some reason they blocked you before you saw the new messages, which would hide all messages. They recently unblocked you, so now you have access to the unread messages again, but they are further down your page because newer messages have been coming in since then.</p>

<p>You have 3 unread messages from one profile. Scroll down your message list and you should see the profile with the (3) over to the right of it. It's about 30 profiles down on your message list, so you will need to scroll down the page.</p>

Anybody else have the bird and red dot saying you have messages that are not there? I’ve been displaying 3 messages for a few days, however, no new messages. It’ll go up to 5, I’ll check and there are 3 new messages, read them and it goes back to 3.

Had a couple message us today. When it popped up, there was a message from a few weeks prior that we didn't get. On top of that, to get to the message, we had to go to their profile and select message. When we tried to select the message from the mailbox, it went to a screen with <recipient name> and just hung there.

Imagine all that it's the weekend and can't get into messages sounds about right

I got a bird and a nu.ber while I was surfing though profiles. Didn't have to log in. Could it actually be fixed?

Not sure if people had noted the changes around email notifications on SLS's closest competitor's site fairly recently, but they now show a red bubble with a 0 in it when you have no new messages. Just one of those things that make you wonder why people spend time fixing something that isn't broken.

Prior to this, no red bubble meant you had no new emails.

I'm not sure about issuing a carrier pigeon. Some folks are kinky, and use more than just the feathers...

I am getting messages but have to keep checking for them. Major pain in the ass!

yes, 'avoid' is more accurate than 'solve'. And they have proven their inability and incompetence before...

They must have read a different dictionary definition of solve that most people. When our company performs analysis for customers, they expect for us to find the root cause of their problems. Then we are asked to submit code changes, or help update their existing configurations to permanently fix the problem.

Interestingly they don't accept the idea they should randomly turn off parts of their infrastructure or accept "workarounds" to their problems.

That’s all that needed to be said. The nonsensical analogies really serve no purpose. If I fall down a well without my phone I won’t be notified if I have messages. If I fall down a well with my phone already logged onto the site, I won’t be notified that I have a message. Silliness!

That is the way it works until it breaks again when the weekend gets here

So if you're logged in for any amount of time, you'll need to click on Messages to see if you got any new ones before logging off, or wait till the next time you log in.

Is that the way Alerts work now too, or do those get updated in real time and/or on a polling cycle?
