Initial Contacting via messaging

Fort Payne, AL, Us

Appreciate your help Wayne -

I did not delete the conversation. I've searched through all my messages and don't find it. If anyone has blocked me it isn't showing on my blocked list. I think it was fairly late in the evening on Sep 3.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the single male that requested the forum thread deleted is the same one I had the IM conversation with.

I am not 100% sure why you would not see the message history if you did not delete it. Unless the other member blocked you. try sorting by a different criteria at the top of the page and see if that makes a difference.

I believe the thread in the forums that you are talking about was deleted by me. I did have a single male request that I delete his thread the other day.

Sorry - I don't delete anything so I assumed the other person deleted a conversation when it disappeared from my messages.

Maybe Wayne has some idea what happened to it.

ETA: An entire forum thread started by the same person has also disappeared - at first he deleted all his posts in the thread and then a day or so later the entire thread was gone. I can't exactly remember the profile name but searching for my best guess doesn't find it. Will messages and forum posts disappear when someone deletes their profile?

It's all still there on my side (sorry, Wayne, but I needed to verify).

I thought that sounded weird. Thanks Wayne

I deleted it Molly. Can you still see the thread?

Wait....if one person deletes the IM thread it gets deleted on both sides?

Can someone confirm this?

Agree, I use more like the old email, and never use video chat.

For an initial contact we suggest using it like email. The recent fixes make this possible.

For chatting with a friend it's fine to use it like IM. Although we prefer other means due to the lack of a good notification system with the IM here for those.

I have at times used it like email and as real time messaging. We are not inundated with so many messages that it's an issue either way. If I do engage with an SM I usually wind up restating that unless he attends local parties or has an SF to bring along, we're not interested, and also point out that this is right in our profile. Some things never change.

Now that the most egregious errors have been addressed, I just treat IM as graphically inferior email, complete with paragraphs. I only rarely engage in real time back and forth messages with potential playmates, although I do it all the time with people I've met through the forum. With playmates though, I treat it like emails and only answer if I'm feeling it in the moment.

Since they increased the message size and added the ability to use carriage returns I treat the IM system pretty much like the old email. I actually prefer that the recipient isn't online when I send an initial message! I don't mind real time IM communication with someone I'm familiar with but it can be annoying with someone new.

I tend towards a message of several sentences often separated into paragraphs. If there is enough content in the recipient's profile I try to indicate that I've read their profile and think we might be a good fit. I search for and play with single guys so that's not always possible. ;-)

I'm not a fan of the fact that if the other person deletes the conversation it disappears from my message history. I loved the mailbox icon that allowed me to see email history when I looked at a profile - if it was gray or missing I knew I'd never contacted them. Now I have to look at the profile then look at my message history. I have to make greater use of Notes on a profile since messages may disappear.

Now that SLS has eliminated mail we all must use the messaging system. What is the consensus . . . . or various opinions as to the best way to make initial contact through the messages system? Clearly respect and manners, as with mail, are required, but is there a different protocol, and with less space preferred approach. Curious on the thoughts from everyone.
