Pineapples

salandrick I am going to put it plainly. Every time a "sign" was chosen it quickly became not a secret and people have been harassed because of it. Anyone remember the old apple with a bite out of it pin (take a bite out of life but it also was known as the original sin)? If you do you know it became the accepted thing but you have to ask where is it now and why is it no longer a thing. The pineapple comes up so much because everyone knows the "meaning" and how much of a joke it is. No one that is serious (or not many) use it as some kind of "secret sign" because it is not a secret. It is the longest running "joke" simply because it has long been a sign of hospitality.

In the 1700's the standard was if the pineapple is out it is okay to visit because the husband is home. Back then it was considered improper for a man even with his wife to visit the home of another man if he were not there but his wife was. The pineapple was a symbol to show it's okay to visit. The upside down pineapple started being a "thing" because it was generally assumed that women wanting company would display the pineapple but put it upside down. This may or may not have been true or since the pineapple was put up and down so much the nail was loose and fell out.

Like the movie says "we dont need no stickin badge"..... or do we need any sign..

Just ask "are you in the lifestyle" if the vibe is right. its worked for us well over 25 years. Its not that hard folks and we go out at least 3-4 times a month and do same.. !

Well here's the thing, it can be helpful to know if someone or couple would be at least interested in talking about swinging without getting your head chopped off, or people running away. So if it's an upside down pineapple or a broken stick for a sign maybe this website needs to pick something and we just start using it as a sign of " at least chatting about swinging" is ok. All these myths but yet we have a community here that can take a vote and maybe send to other sites to see if they get the same response and then start using a sign for sure.

It really comes and goes for me. Sometimes I think I think I see interest and sometimes I don't see shit that's right in front of me.

It's really a crap shoot but I'm also a bit forward and likely to gently question a couple about their... hobbies.

DTH...I totally agree. I think my issue with that is I am too aloof to pick up on those verbal or silent queues. It is easier if I am in a situation where I know this can be happening but when out in the general public I am most likely not paying enough attention. My GF notices people looking at me and she will ask "did you see that woman look at you?" Nope...certainly when with my GF I am distracted by her. I wish I were more in tune with this suggestive body language form of communication.

I am on the fence with the pineapple, colored scrunchy, black ring thing. Sure they help those who may be unable to read people's body language, but I believe that if one has an awareness of those around them, they can pick up on the non verbal cues. It is far more erotic in which there is a silent game of non verbal language being exchanged is both flirtatious and and sexual.

Agree about upstate NY. I had heard that displaying an upside down pineapple flag somewhere outside your house indicates swingers.

Hi guys! I knows it's hotter than (you know what). Those pineapples? Sliced in spears, iced, are great (and oh the mental image is too good.). Why not have a pineapple party, you know, creative slices ( or styles, hee hee). Oooo, a kiddie pool, two tubes deep, with islands of floating containers of pineapple, in whatever shape inspires. Enjoy.

So interesting pineapple moment today; was at the local hardware store to get some spray paint. I meet a lady on the paint aisle and we struck up a conversation about what we’re looking for. I came across “pineapple yellow “…. We both kind of snickered and I asked her if she thought it might be an upside down pineapple yellow and she busted out laughing. The conversation went in a new direction after that…………
Can’t wait to get back together with her!

Maybe they know the signal and are not interested. You are in Utah BTW..

We get some odd looks about these pineapples, but no one bites.... lol.
so, it's safe to say it's a lost meaning. we will try to keep it alive and see what happens.

This reminds me: my pineapple sticker is almost completely faded now, and it hasn't been on my car long.
I should get a new and improved one!

Well said @willystn! You can't change the world but you can change your corner. Summer is time to relax! Invite old friends out, make a point to find and welcome new friends. Put your feet up, enjoy a cool drink, great conversations around the fire.... and as we know and love in the "Upside down pineapple lifestyle"... the sweet sensual touch and play with others :)

Happy summer everyone. A cool pineapple would do well now...Even if they're green, a little aging and they'll do the job...have fun, ignore the news just for a few hours relax (?) it"ll be good for you. :)

most were not saying upside down pineapple thats why I said what I did.

Salandrick, you're 100% correct. The Pineapple has been a symbol of welcome for hundred of years. Before airwick air fresheners folks would hang a pineapples in the front entrance to scent the the home. BUT if you see a pineapple upside down - that is the unofficial symbol of the swinging lifestyle. And if you see a flag or tee that says "Plays well with others" Its a safe bet they would like you to come up and say HI :)

Just remember if you see a Pineapple in South Carolina it's most likely not a swinger. Here in SC a pineapple means welcome, dates back to the 1700's. So just don't go knocking on doors wanting to swing. It doesn't mean there is no swingers in SC just doesn't mean the Pineapple is a sign of a swinger.

Pineapple with a twist

First ever sighting of a person (woman) in upside down pineapple pajamas in a retail store during the day!

Pineapples can appear anywhere, you've just got to keep a look out. Such as, a pineapple pillow in the back window of our street rod. decals on the rear window of our pickup. Yes we're country folk and here on purpose. That doesn't make it dull. Friendly and polite are important elements. Have a fun summer. Today is here, tomorrow is only a promise , beyond that...uncertainty. Why worry? Just enjoy where you're at for as long as you're there.
