"A millionaire's homeless son was found dead from an accidental overdose following a long history of drug addiction, an inquest has ruled.

Ryan Staffiere, 42, was found dead while living in a pod for the homeless next to County Hall in Truro, Cornwall, in February 2025.

Mr Staffiere, who previously told a local newspaper his millionaire parents had kicked him out of the family home due to his drug and drink problems, began using cannabis and abusing alcohol from the age of eleven.

Throughout his teens he took LSD, amphetamine and dabbled with heroin before he became a regular user of the class A drug by the time he was in his 20s.

In the paper interview, which took place in 2019, a little over five years before his death, he described himself as a 'good boy gone wrong'.

Mr Staffiere's mother Sheila said her eldest child was very bright and sporty, and was a talented rugby player but he dropped out of education due to addiction.

His parents owned holiday cottages in the county and were millionaires, Mr Staffiere had claimed.

He told how he had dealt cannabis aged 14 and had a long criminal record with jail sentences as he fed his drug and alcohol addictions."

I've always heard this is a potential problem for anyone who suddenly makes a ton of money through "talent", whether it be sports, Hollywood or music. You can financially mismanage yourself into poverty no matter how much you make.

I thought I heard that there was some plan in place to force a substantial portion of NFL and NBA players earnings to some sort of pension fund?

“I’m right back to where it all began — back in Coney Island, back in the projects, back in the fire.”

And in 2025, Telfair was ordered to serve six months in prison for failing to complete his court-ordered community service (2).

Telfair went from being a millionaire to being broke. His cautionary tale offers a sobering reality check for young high-income earners about the fragility of sudden wealth.

‘Now I’ve got to run around broke’
Over the course of his NBA career, Telfair — also known as “Bassy” — earned an estimated $19 million, according to Sportrac (3). He also had endorsement deals from companies, including Adidas, which signed Telfair to a deal worth over $10 million when the promising hooper’s career began, back in the mid-2000s (4).

By all accounts, the point guard seemed to be set for life, but a series of post-retirement legal issues ended up severely damaging his wealth. In 2017, Telfair was arrested in New York after a routine traffic stop led police to discover marijuana and several firearms in his vehicle (5).

Two years later, his wife, Samantha, filed for divorce, which added another layer of financial strain.

Then, in 2021, Telfair was one of 18 former NBA players indicted in a health care fraud case tied to the NBA’s benefits plan (6).

He pled guilty to the charges in 2023 and was sentenced to three years of probation (7). After missing his court-ordered community service, Telfair was ordered to prison for a six-month sentence in August 2025.

Telfair has explained that without a steady source of retirement income and facing a lengthy list of legal fees, it didn’t take long to run out of money.
·

“Fighting the Feds and my divorce affected my finances. Now I’ve got to run around broke,” Telfair explained in his documentary while standing outside the Surfside Gardens projects in Coney Island, Brooklyn, where he was raised.

“This right here is the same building y’all seen through the fire that I grew up in. It’s crazy to go through my whole NBA journey, go through everything I went through, and end up right back in the same spot.”

Must have been a really fast balloon if they thought it would take 10 days to do the job.

"US military shot down party balloon near El Paso after suspecting drone, official says"

A U.S. official confirmed to Fox News that the U.S. military earlier this week shot down what was later determined to be a party balloon near El Paso, Texas, after initially assessing it as a possible foreign drone.

The misidentification eventually led to a total shutdown of airspace around the El Paso airport.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government has no information indicating drone activity along the U.S.-Mexico border following a temporary airspace restriction in Texas that U.S. officials linked to counter-drone measures.

"We have no information indicating drone activity along the border. If the FAA or any U.S. government agency has relevant information, they can ask directly the Government of Mexico," she said in a news conference Wednesday.

She said Mexican airspace had not been closed.
A balloon? Omg. Such efficient use of our resources.
Does anyone else here get AARP emails? The last one I got was kind of a WTF. The title of one article was "11 Products Getting More Expensive in 2026". It starts off like this -

"First, the good news: price increases are cooling overall. The inflation rate notched 2.7 percent for the 12 months ending December 2025, down from 3 percent year-over-year in September 2025, according to the latest figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.?

Now, the bad news: Some products are predicted to get more expensive this year — much more expensive, in some instances."

Then it goes on to say expect to pay more for Health Insurance, Utilities, Groceries, Auto and Home Insurance, Clothes and Footwear, Smartphones and Computers, Jewelry, and Shipping, but inflation is at 2.7%. Yeah, sure it is. I wonder if anyone at AARP read this and thought, "What was the good news again?".
I don't get emails from AARP but I've been a member since I was eligible. Why? Because I'm always good with saving a buck or two and don't mind using my AARP card I do get there publication in the mil which has some good articles. when it's to my advantage. Finally, I appreciate some of their lobbying efforts for health legislation.
