Our take is simple. Do what makes you feel comfortable. If you feel putting on a condom for penetration will protect you from HIV, which it will, do it. If you think that the chance of getting HIV is sooooooooo low that you are willing to risk a 1 in a 200 million chance, go for it. Neither are wrong. It is just that dimmer and light switch.

Now, please do not believe anything I have written and question everything. Take the time to educate yourself. The CDC has a BUNCH of information about this. Read it. The person who gave you that argument is technically correct and technically incorrect at the same time. The reason I state it that way is it is all about either treating things like a light switch or a dimmer. A light switch is binary. It is either on or off. There is nothing in between. A dimmer is a lot closer to reality though in my opinion. It can be off or it can be partially to fully on.

Can you get HIV from oral. YES. So technically the guy is correct. If you are willing to take that risk, a condom is not going to make a difference in penetration because it is hypocritical. How common is getting HIV from Oral? OMG it is so rare. If we just use the US data, there are somewhere in the 35 to 40k new cases per year. Of those, how many were from oral sex? If it were 4 that may be a big number. This is that dimmer situation. The chances of you getting HIV from oral sex is not zero, but it is really damn close. If you are comfortable with that risk, so be it. Now if we look at heterosexual sex, no anal, the chances of getting HIV either as a woman or a man is also VERY low. Out of those 40k according to the CDC, there were 1,032 new cases. BUT . . . of those 2,057 cases it also includes anal. So getting HIV from vaginal is VERY low. Why? Because of HIV is transmitted. It requires coming from a blood product (which carries HIV) and then getting into the blood of the recipient. Semen is a blood product, breast milk is a blood product. But here is another point that makes HIV odd. If you have an open bleeding cut and I was able to pour a vial of HIV+ blood onto that cut, there is no guarantee that you will get infected. HIV has to 'catch' and hook into the recipient (this is called the viral load.) I do not think anyone has done a study to determine the % chance of getting infected because, well, that would be testing on humans.

Going back to vaginal sex, let's assume the guy is HIV+ and shoots his load into a pussy. Will that woman get HIV? Dunno. Why? Because is she menstruating? Does she have cuts inside her vagina? What is his viral load? This is another one of those near zero numbers, but NOT zero. Now if he shoots his load into her ass . . . well, assholes RIP very easily. So the opportunity is much higher. As no one has broken down those 2057 cases, you can either assume 100% are from her pussy, 100% her ass or figure out something with a degree of confidence that it is in between. For me, I'd put it at 20-30 of those 2057 cases are from vaginal.

So that is why the guy was right and wrong.

Now to mess with your head some more. What are the chances that you will even meet someone who is HIV+? This is where people get confused. of those roughly 40k new cases, 30k are gay/bi men and IV drug users. There are 8800 cases of heterosexuals. Assuming that these people are not in jail and/or got it there (there is a high HIV population in jail) This breakdown is fairly consistent with the HIV+ population. It may not be 100% accurate but it's close. So that means that 22% of HIV+ in the US is heterosexual. There are 1.1mm HIV + That means there are roughly 240,000 HIV+ heterosexuals out of 250mm who are in the sexually active/age range. That gives you a less than one percent chance of even MEETING a HIV+ person. Think about that. You have to meet over 100 people to finally meet one. That of course is if you use the general population. Now how many of them are going to fuck you? I tend to believe that if you have 100 HIV+ people, that 99 HIV+ people will NOT engage in sex with others. That 1 is the person who doesn't know they have HIV. So now you have 1% of less than 1% of the population. You have 1% of 240k, 2400. That means there are 2400 people in the US who do not know they have HIV and will fuck you. That means there is .001% chance of finding a HIV+ person that MAY fuck you.

I recently ran into an argument made in favor of bareback. The supporter said if you practice oral sex without protection there is no point in wearing a condom.

I disagreed with the argument because the one STD that scares me most is HIV and supposedly it's fragile when exposed to air and soap/water. It is harder to expose it to either inside a vagina.
