HEADLINE:::::"COLUMBIA, S.C. – As Mike Pence discussed his tenure as vice president with about 500 religious Republicans, some listeners couldn't help but wonder if they were seeing a preview of coming attractions."
"That traitor" couldn't get the nomination for, DOG CATCHER.  He could have stopped the mess our Country is in from his possession as V P.  Just rule like any DEMOCRAT would have ruled.  SELF-PRESERVATION. V P MIKE PENCE SOLD OUT OUR COUNTRY FOR WHAT REASON I DON'T KNOW.

Connie 1,

Thanks for the post. It's one of the more powerful and poignant ones I've read here.

I'm doing some interpreting of what you posted, but I feel I have a sense of what you are saying that is stupid or unwise.

Have no idea how this works// create a reply to what? Maybe I can be a 75 year old white guy who has a bronze star from Korea who held dying black and white guys in moving on just not to be shoot. How stupid is it !

HFT,

FundamentalLaw just made one of the best and most interesting and historically informed posts I've seen made in these Political threads.

It's always refreshing when he posts.

It helps clean the air, as he offers welcome, fresh, intriguing provocations and reflections about our history and our politics today.

History has to be seen as distinct from historical narrative. Historians try to make sense of disparate events to promote understanding and, in some cases, ideologies. This is why it is so important to read the original record and think critically about the sequences of events. The American Civil War (also known as the War Between the States and, here in the South, as the War of Northern Aggression) might best be couched as war between two economies, industrial and agrarian. That agrarian economy depended then, as it depends today, on a labor force working in the fields. Casting the conflict in economic/labor terms in no way diminishes the immorality of slavery or the importance of acknowledging the 1619 narrative: the facts are that for two centuries immigrant Europeans drove indigenous Americans off their land, annexed those lands, and bought slaves to farm the land as their strategy for economic betterment. This was "the American Way". The better question, perhaps, is whether Emancipation was intended to punish the South or whether to deliver it from an unsustainable practice. It's a question worth asking because we are seeing that narrative tension--"punishment" versus "deliverance" play out in contemporary American politics: the party in power asserts a deliverance narrative, the party not in power claims that the actions taken by those in power are punishment.

"""""A therapist explains 'compounded trauma' after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said the insurrection compounded her grief from sexual assault.""""" Her grief from her attempted sexual assault on the Guy or Gal, they ran away before A O C could succeed.... That's her "compounded trauma" the rejection was awful. No matter how drunk they were at her Bar, they still managed to run away. Sexual assault, another false claim by A O C.

Intoitt gets Civil War history right: Grade A

HFT flunks history again

Just look at the Declarations of Secession of the states who rebelled and they are explicitly clear that their secession is to defend white supremacy and slavery.

They don’t claim they are defending states rights

The “rights” they were going to war to defend were the right to own slaves and right for whites to be the superior race.

Thornton, CO, Us

Into, You better go back to 8th grade. It was states rights of agricultural economy against industrial states who wanted high tariffs. The Southern States didn't want any tariffs because they exported the products. Yes, they did want slave labor that is why Lincoln freed the slaves to take away their agricultural power and stop the secession. "Don't tell me Sister Mary Agony" was lying to us 8th graders.

Don't tell HFT that he was there for the civil war, he knows the truth. J/K..lol

HFT. The civil war was not fought over states rights. That's what you where taught in 8 grade The south was controlled by rich plantation owners who didn't want to lose thier free help so they cloaked it in states rights to incite the common man to have a cause. You are terribly misinformed on almost everything you post

Thornton, CO, Us

Erotica, I don't think Lincoln was so great. He should have let the South secede. They would have take all of todays problems with them. The south was an agricultural economy. I think the idea was for the South to take over Cuba, Venezuela, Columbia, Caribbean Islands and Central America to be one big agricultural Country. The North was a industrial Country, high tariffs. The south wanted no tariffs. Civil war was for states rights not freeing the slaves.

Yuck. The thought of Trump at a swingers club makes me feel kind of nauseous. ;-) Now that would be taking one for the team!

To reduce division and show remorse for the violence and terror and deaths from the insurrection, all GOP leaders need to do is to say openly and in public what is true: the election was not stolen.

Why can’t they tell this simple truth as a way to heal?

It’s an ugly side of the USA that the GOP “servants” of the country are in effect betraying it for personal and partisan advantage.

Biden is making some good appointments. I like what I read briefly about his new Secretary of Labor.

Trump has faced 26 sexual misconducts accusations from women.

Should he be banned from Swing Clubs?

I doubt that would respect any rules or laws or constitution about “no is no.”

It’s the party of anti-Lincoln

It’s the party of Jefferson Davis / George Wallace.

It’s been since near the beginning of my political memory in early 1960s

It hasn't been the party of Lincoln since I have been alive.

Republicans need to decide what it means to be a Republican. The party of Lincoln seems to have left the building.

"> I think the tide has shifted. Identification of Trump for some Republicans now can or will be a liability, not an asset."

I beg to differ. Trumps grip on the party has regularly been underestimated. A cult doesn't just disappear.

I think the tide has shifted. Identification of Trump for some Republicans now can or will be a liability, not an asset.

I think this is definitely the case. I'd have to think the moderate Republicans and independents have to now be firmly against him. And definitely, history is not going to judge Trump kindly. I think today probably dropped Trump down to right around the very bottom of the ranking of Presidents, if not the very bottom. Who would want to associate with a guy like that?

@MOE

I see it differently.

I see it based upon my own bias and experience. I saw the same shit in Miami with the riots.

You see people fighting change. These people are being attacked at their livelihood and fighting back.

During the riots in Miami, it was the fact that the pecking order was changing. It was Whites then Blacks. Then the Cubans showed up. The Blacks felt like they should stay 2nd in the pecking order. They didn't The Cubans overtook them. Thus the anger and violence.

Here you have people who have seen stagnant wages. You see them look at the cost of real estate in CA, NYC, etc., and go apeshit. They are looking at Real Estate that is more than they will ever earn throughout their lifetime. They see it flaunted on TV. They see it flaunted now on Social Media. They look at some young 19-year-old girl who is famous for what and now is a billionaire! That irks them. All the same time they scream that we are a country of opportunity. They are seeing the opportunity pass them by. They are not lazy. They are hard workers. They hear stories from their parents and grandparents about how they had a good life. They worked at the GM factory for 30 years, retired, got a gold watch and a nice pension. They don't have that as an option anymore. They see that the stuff that used to be made has gone away from their region. This is fueling desperation which fuels anger. The days of hard physical days work being able to support your family is evading them. The country is changing and they can't change with it. They read a story about a 21-year-old hired at Facebook for 280k a year. They look at some scrawny zit faced kid and wonder wtf is this guy getting so much money for and the kid can barely lift a gallon of milk.

The reality is that it is the party that THEY voted for that fucked them over. It is themselves who fucked themselves over. They love the fact that they can pay less and get more at Walmart. In the late 1990s I bought a portable DVD player from Panasonic. It was 1k. I used it as a means to keep our kid entertained when we went on road trips. Now, that same device is under $50 and includes a carrying case and headphones! So today, the average guy can buy that device whereas 20 years ago, it was out of their realm. Goods have gotten cheaper at the expense of their jobs making shit. I seriously saw this when I started doing stuff in the apparel industry. As I said in 2005, it's really simple, a guy in America makes about $100 a day. A guy in Mexico makes 100a week. A guy in China gets 150 a month. A guy in Vietnam gets even less. So capitalism is at play and it is destroying their livelihood. All the time that they scream they are pro-business, they are not realizing that they are pro their own extinction. They don't see that people like me are the ones that destroy jobs, all in the name of capitalism. Every time I write code, I know that it is to increase productivity, aka, need fewer people to do the work. Automation is the destruction of their jobs.

It's ok. I realize where things are going. I know the big picture issues. China does NOT want its currency to increase. If it does, then wages go up. If China loses the designation as the world's factory, then what happens to their ~1.5bn citizens? Our country is still in the change from being a country that made shit to a country that is service oriented. Those people you see . . . they want it to go back to making shit . . .that's because that is their skillset.

MoeandKathy,

You last post is something dear to my own concerns and interests in studying the USA and politics.

I’d add nothing to it, but I am willing to plagiarize from it.

Thanks.

Wow, a double-helping of block a moron Wednesday.

When people disagree with you politically.. they must be racists. #elblocko

Who are the trumpsters in my view?

White people who see their grips on power diminishing as other races demand equal treatment.

White people who see their privileges eroding as other races slowly share the wealth

White people who for the longest time understood that their economic prosperity came at the expense of the misery of other nations, and races, yet not willing to let go of any portion of that.

White people who realize they are becoming a dying minority, and the new generation does not share their values and morals.

And white country people who see themselves disadvantaged as cities prosper and get all the political and financial attention.

That is the crowd as I see it. Anyone cares to add more to it?
