Your Profession
Myself, retired to help my son with his performance car shop doing the paperwork. and Lissa works for the good Ol so called U.S.A
I retired after being laid off.
Retired from one of America’s largest car dealership as a buyer.
We have noticed that the public safety, teaching & nursing/medical professions are well represented in the lifestyle.
I’m an organic farmer and fruit/nut , habitat tree nursery owner.
Been a residential construction superintendent for 35yrs; the wife has been in logistics for over 30yrs.
I have a PhD in organic chemistry. My first career had a pharma phase and a polymer chemist phase.
My second and current career is at the intersection of legal and healthcare, such as fraud, resolution of contract disputes, law enforcement and insurance.
A funny as hell work story that I had.
Several years ago I got a call from a customer. Needed me to come as soon as I could for a wall repair and new toilet install.
Apparently,,, during 3rd shift at this factory. An employee that needed to relieve himself in the restroom. Was quite surprised by a forklift driver that accidentally shoved a large tote of material into the opposing wall. He only pushed the wall in in 6 or so inches but was enough to bust the stool clean off the floor and send the pantless guy to the floor. Nobody was injured but they told me the the guy on shitter was allowed to go home and change. Lol
Needless to say. After the repairs I was asked to add guard rail outside the bathroom.
American Gigolo was pretty much written about my career choice.
"exposure to/understanding of the very short distance between healthy life and the end of life"
^^^this^^^
Been in the construction biz since January 2nd 1986. Been self employed for the last 25ish years.
Damn good at what I do and not smart enough to do anything else.
Tried camper and rv repair for few years just to break up the monotony of construction, but ended up going right back.
Commercial roof coatings have been the focus for the last few years.
My wife works with me and at one time i had 6 employees but I've trimmed the business down to just what 2 of us can do.
She is a nurse also!!
We are healthcare professionals.
We too have noticed that while the LS is as diverse as life itself with respect to how people spend their time in the vanilla world, there are some concentrations--including first responders, healthcare people (especially Emergency/Trauma/Critical Care), and people directly responsible for lives (pilots, people who work in nuclear power plants, military). We have also noticed another group--those who have survived threats to their own lives and those who have sustained great loss and have had to find joy in their grief. That does not describe everyone, of course, but these are some concentrations.
What binds the groups that we have noticed together is their exposure to/understanding of the very short distance between healthy life and the end of life.
We are all pretty good at recounting how we got started with swinging.
Fewer can describe why they started swinging, and further why continuing is somehow important and affirming to them.
You would be surprised.
While I am an academic, she is a journeyman painter. So we have friends of all academic and work backgrounds.
I myself, like working class people more than academics...
My wife has been a CNA home health aid and house cleaner.me I was a carpenter, horse shoer, and truck driver. I spend 30 years as a carpenter, do 8 hrs a day in construction then after work and weekend would shoe horse, did that for 30 years.
As far as people in our circle apparently most of you have a higher class of friends then us. We've had a couple of architects, bookkeeper engineer city employee and a deep sea salvage diver
The first time, maybe the only time, that we were contacted by a DEA officer, it scared the begegious out of us. That guy was either very kinky, one hellofa undercover operator, or a very good liar. There was also a local DA, a CFO, and several small business owners.
and to add a tidbit most all are A Type personalities.. and the ones we swing with are successful in life ! For "us" it was always a fun outlet with fun people... mostly!
We've been swinging for over 20 years now, mostly 2+2, but numerous house parties and clubs through the years. I've not collected actual data and we've met people from all sorts of occupations, but I believe salespeople, nurses, and LEO make up a very significant percentage of lifestyle folks. I think there is a parallel in the mentality of swinging and those jobs of working well with people, working under pressure, some risk, etc.
A few outliers we've met I can recall offhand: At least a couple of commercial pilots, a local radio DJ (our regular SF hook-up for a while), a local TV weather man (we recognized him in Trapeze far from home, and hooked up), several farmers actually, new home builders, several C-suite level business execs, and a plethora of others. As mentioned above by a couple folks, several school teachers as well.
@Current
That is friggin funny!
About a decade ago I took a job. The owner was a trust fund baby. His father had buildings named after him at a high end college. This guy was smart, but stupid. He had really never worked a day in his life, but was highly educated. He had bought the company about 2 years prior to when I got there and pared the head count down to about 80.
I was wondering why he was running the company the way he was. I kept watching his actions. He had a lot of big word salads that kept the employees feeling that he was a good owner. He was not a good owner, nor a good businessman. One day it was all the managers and C-level people in a conference room. I had enough of the owner's bullshit. I said to the owner, "Is this the type of company that just needs to make 100k or lose 100k because your wife wants you out of the house and not pestering her all the time?" No one else had seen that. I was right. Watching him dance over that topic was entertaining. The managers after the meeting thanked me because they said it explained his actions the last three years.
@Flip Flops and 5Looking
I am finally trying to pare back my work activities with some success. I have some bucket list hard traveling on may agenda, while I'm still fit enough to do it, and am presently overwhelmed with trying to get my new primary home ready to live in and my current one ready to sell. Along with the usual work load.
I had a conversation about "retiring" with a friend who's my age and sold the bulk of his real estate portfolio to a private equity firm last year. I congratulated him and asked him what was on his agenda for the near future. His response was "I'm not sure but I better think of something because my wife told me the other day 'I married you for better or for worse, not for lunch every Goddamned day!'"
I too am a Nurse and know some folks in the medical field who are swingers. I believe it's because we appreciate life and enjoying life with some of the things we see.
I have a couple of funny stories regarding the first 2 professions that EroticAmazon mention ... those being politician and Rabbi/Priest ....
We are a host couple at one of our area LS clubs (which means we give tours to the newbies). One time we get paged to come to the checkin area to give a tour. I get there and there's a single guy there who would not check in and pay until he personally spoke to the owner, who was elsewhere in the club.
So the owner comes down to talk to him and he talks to her to make sure the owner is not going to give out his personal information to anyone or tell anyone he was there, because he said he is an area politician. Turns out the guy is from somewhere in PA and this club is in MD... the owner tells him "Sir I don't give information out to anyone, I don't even know who you are". None of us knew who he was, not even our friends from PA. He could've been the President of his kids school PTA for all we know, calling himself a politician. I guess the night turned out ok for him ... he got a BJ from my wife (her Aunt Flo was in town so that's all she could do) while I played with a single female next to them.
Another time, we got invited over to play at our friends' house. This is a couple we have played with a few times and always had fun. They told us they had a new single female friend there as well who is going to join in, making it a 5-sum. So we all play and had fun, and at some point during play, the female friend asks me to fuck her ass. Sure .. .absolutely!! Then after we are done, she informs me that I just took her anal virginity. Wow great!!! Then, even better, she then tells us that she is the Pastor at a church (which our friends already knew) ... I thought, wow, I fucked the Pastor's ass for the first time ... if only her congregation could see her now!!!
Welp, just got e-mail notification that I was not selected for one of the jobs that I've applied for. So, I just keep plugging away. With what I've got for a job now, it is not cutting it; thus why I am searching.
AC/DC's song "Ride On" fits the bill right now.
Good for you
