Something a little similar happened to me this morning.
I was on my deck with my first cup of coffee. I hadn't moved in a minute or two, and a bird flew across the yard and landed on the deck rail within arms reach.
For about 10 seconds, that robin just sat there completely unaware that it was that close to a human. It then turned directly at me, chirpped twice as if to be telling me something I couldn't understand, and then off it went.
15 seconds and the whole affair was over, but wow...it was pretty awesome.
