I always find it amusing when they ask super-old people what their secret is.

Generally, they give reasons that are like whiskey, bacon, cheeseburgers and sunshine. Or what have you.

I mean - what else are they supposed to say? They don't really know. Living to 90 may be attributed to good living habits, but living beyond 105 is pretty much dumb luck.

Don Rickles... That one's gonna sting for a while. Woulda coulda shoulda...I was supposed to see him in Vegas late last year, but I let something keep me from pulling the trigger. ...Regrets, I've had a few...

I saw him in '97 with my now-ex and my best friend and his wife, at the Desert Inn. Cabaret seating. Long tables running back from the stage and rounds and booths behind us. About 5 minutes before he came out, I stood up and realized that the steps up to the stage were directly behind my buddy's seat. I joked about him walking behind my pal and chatting with him.

Sure enough, Rickles walks out from side-stage, through the audience and he's staring at my buddy the entire time. He goes right up those stairs and doesn't stop staring until he reaches the mic. His first line, "Filthy Mexicans...Shouldn't you be upstairs cleaning rooms? My buddy's half Italian and half Portugese, quite a bit darker complected than I, with Ricky Ricardo wavy hair. Rickles went off for about 5 minutes, as my friend tried to tell him he was Italian... and then, throughout the performance, he'd walk back over and banter with my friend.

At the end of the show, he brought everyone up who he'd made fun of and gave each a bottle of Dom.

That was a fun night.

Rest in peace, Don Rickles.

In April of 1962, Keith Richards wrote a letter to his favorite aunt, telling her how much he liked Chuck Berry. Here's an excerpt:

"You know I was keen on Chuck Berry and I thought I was the only fan for miles but one mornin' on Dartford Stn. (that's so I don't have to write a long word like station) I was holding one of Chuck's records when a guy I knew at primary school 7-11 yrs y'know came up to me. He's got every record Chuck Berry ever made and all his mates have too, they are all rhythm and blues fans, real R&B I mean (not this Dinah Shore, Brook Benton crap) Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Chuck, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker all the Chicago bluesmen real lowdown stuff, marvelous. Bo Diddley he's another great.

Anyways the guy on the station, he is called Mick Jagger and all the chicks and the boys meet every Saturday morning in the 'Carousel' some juke-joint well one morning in Jan I was walking past and decided to look him up. Everybody's all over me I get invited to about 10 parties. Beside that Mick is the greatest R&B singer this side of the Atlantic and I don't mean maybe. I play guitar (electric) Chuck style we got us a bass player and drummer and rhythm-guitar and we practice 2 or 3 nights a week. SWINGIN'."

Three months after writing this letter, Keith played his first gig with the new band, calling themselves The Rolling Stones.
