That that's right if you want to party with us and the other faces and names that you know from social media and tiktok head on over to swingersociety.net can't wait to see you there hey there pineapple people and welcome to the swing nation podcast we are your hosts northern guy and southern girl in today's episode we have a special a special episode that lacy has been waiting for maybe her whole life oh for sure but today we're gonna get in depth and talk to you about the pineapple yes get ready people you ready are you excited for this episode i mean i am i am but i've also heard this a lot but i know that like probably people that haven't listened to the podcast probably haven't so for them um it's probably going to be interesting for me it's just like i love you babe but it's a little long-winded it's long-winded people want to know people are fascinated with the pineapple they are they want to know the origin story we can ask more than anything what's up with the pineapple what's going on with the pineapple tell us about the pineapple well and we really leaned into the pineapple not on purpose like and i think like it's very regional like in the south of pineapple for swingers is very heavy but you can go to other places and it's not a big deal like it's more of the like five point star or ring on the right hand there's all these different symbols for swingers but i think the south is very heavy on the pineapple so like somebody that's on the other side of the country or even you know their side of the world it's like what the hell are y'all talking about why is there a pineapple we don't get that reference so i think it just kind of depends but yeah i mean we've definitely got a lot of shit about the pineapple on tiktok and stuff like people are like you've ruined the pineapple for me forever um but i don't think we're the we're definitely not the only group that loves the pineapple it is definitely it's definitely undoubtedly especially here in the southern u.s it is definitely a thing well if you go to any beach town like into like their souvenir shop everything has pineapples on it right like we went to merle beach and like literally every other item there's some what's that southern brand that brand of clothing that's pineapple i can't make it off the top of my head but there's tons there's tons of pineapple stuff and then like iv um not uh ivf so infertility they use the pineapple i mean there's a lot of groups that just genuinely like the pineapple and i feel like they feel like we've ruined it for them which and i think they're kind of wrong sorry we'll share it we're good at sharing though that's what i always say when somebody says you ruined the pineapple i always say i always comment back and say it's okay we're good at sharing but if you really just love the pineapple and then like you are maybe more of like a religious person and don't want to be associated with swingers i could see how like maybe you don't want to buy that pineapple shirt i gotcha but we're going to get into all of that but first before we dive into the depths of pineapple-ness it's thanksgiving it is thanksgiving day thanksgiving happy thanksgiving swing nation swinger society our family our friends everybody listening

And we have about like two and a half, three weeks, would you say? Yeah, three weeks.

Like she doesn't cook. I made Rice Krispie Treats. That's what you do for Thanksgiving. That is it. Okay, this is what I had to bring. Rice Krispie Treats. Okay. My mom ordered a cake from a local bakery that I went and picked up. Mom, cake? Thanksgiving cake? If you have been on any of our TikTok lives, people ask, what the hell does the pineapple mean why what what the hell's going on and if you ask me that i'm like oh it's just a sign for swingers you know back in the day swingers would put a pineapple upside down to find people but pre-internet that's my answer dan's answer is like a 15 minute spill he gets on his soapbox and he's gotten mad at me before because I've like rolled my eyes. People have called you out. They've been like, Lacey's so annoyed right now. Well, I don't know. I guess because I think like TikTok answers need to be like quick, precise, to the point. You know, because you're live. You've got people popping in and out. Also, I do lives almost daily. So for me to answer a question like like that like it's just a really quick response where Dan does them like maybe once or twice a month so he doesn't mind a 10-minute answer you know like he doesn't mind being long-winded and so I guess to have heard it so many times and I'm just like I don't know it's just like a husband and wife thing I love you i adore you i love your stories but sometimes i if you know me i do get annoyed on tiktok live just naturally and then you add in a 10 minute long story about christopher columbus and you know i just it gets a lot but i'm here for this. You're going to piss a bunch of bunch of people off okay so where does the pineapple grow i don't know but he didn't roll up on some beach and be like climb the tree and pull the pineapple down come on hey stick this is a journey all right this is a this is a auto this is you know this is for the listeners out there okay According to my research Christopher Columbus is very likely the first European to ever taste that and eat the pineapple okay that's what I'm getting at okay thank you right we're not gonna say he discovered it if you if you test this this podcast for a story if you're a historian I apologize for everything I'm about to say because we're probably gonna fight this this up but you're going to get the gist of the pineapple story once we get through it dan is a storyteller nothing else okay but we're not going to say christopher columbus all right discover the pineapple he is 1492 christopher columbus is sailing the ocean blue he stumbles upon this south american country where they come out and they give him this rare fruit he's never seen before it looks like a giant um a giant pine cone it's wearing this crown made up in his head of leaves and it's just just rare exotic fruit he's super impressed he's like i have to put this in my boat i must sail back to the king i must deliver him this fruit it's magical i've never tasted this before it has to get back to europe i. I must deliver him this fruit. It is magical. That's not how this happened. I've never tasted this before. It has to get back to Europe. I have to show the queen. Let me get it in my boat and sail back. He did not sail back. You are making this shit up. But the story is Christopher Columbus, early explorers, whoever. Somebody. Somebody tried it. They find pineapples in the in the west right but you know because it was the fruit originally originated when they think in brazil somewhere around the amazon these early explorers find locals they give them the fruit they exchange whatever for it whiskey maybe i don't know they give them pineapples they bring pineapples back to europe that's that's the truth right mine's a little exaggerated but you get the idea right yeah all right so christopher columbus pissed everybody off he's in his boat yeah he's sailing back to europe he gives the pineapple to the queen she tastes it for the king this is the king you don't even know you're making this shit up and he's like oh my god can we restart no we're not restarting we don't know anything about a king and a queen you're making that no that's true king charles tastes this fruit and it's like it's the most delicious fruit i've ever had right um is king charles in your notes yeah he is okay i swear you're just okay we got to get this back on track go all right so king char Charles eats the fruit right and he's like I love this fruit it is the best it is and it very quickly spreads amongst the nobles in Europe that part is true okay King Charles did taste it at one time there's actually a portrait of King Charles holding a pineapple okay you can google that Google that. Okay. Let's get this back on track. Okay. So basically the pineapple was this rare thing. So it was held. In high accord. Yes. Do you know how much a pineapple in Europe would have cost you in today's money? Well, I do. Well, how much? $8,000. Eight. Because it's in your show notes. Yes, it is. $8,000. Yeah. Which is a lot. That's a that's a lot of money a lot of dollars for a piece of fruit it really is i mean but it makes sense that they had to like sail it back across the world yeah and the world they thought was flat for a while yeah yeah so this is this is the time frame we're in right right so the european nobles to show off show how wealthy they are just ridiculous money money. You know, they got Donald Trump money. They got Bill Gates money. They're showing off. They start, pineapples start becoming a fixture at these royal parties. Yeah. Yeah. So if you're Kim Kardashian, right, of today, you would have a pineapple on your dinner table when you have your friends over to show them how cool you are. Okay. You get what I'm saying got it i got it you're not impressed with me no i love you so much this is killing you this story is literally killing you you're my favorite person keep going all right so but you get the idea yeah i do yeah we all do europeans love pineapples but you have to be the uber rich you're the one percenter if you can afford a pineapple. Gotcha. And so that kind of spreads amongst Europe. Right. King Charles gets a painting with it. That's how cool pineapple. We all got it. OK. All right. Now fast forward. Right. Christopher Cumblis sells back across the ocean, discovers America. Colonies come. We start colonizing what is now the new world in america um as as america starts to expand obviously more colonies you start to get to north the south all the different um you know states yeah especially in the south the pineapple again becomes the symbol of wealth right yeah um and this is why in the south it's really like a sign of hospitality um a few different um theories behind that one being the same thing where if you invite people over and they come to your house you have this rare expensive fruit not as rare and expensive because now instead of having to sell across halfway across the world you just have to sell you know to south america from north america yeah a little more affordable but still you got to have some big bucks yeah gotcha is it kind of like bringing wine like if you were right but like like a modern almost but you know wine was probably depending on where you were in the world probably but i mean even now i mean like you could bring an expensive bottle of wine or you can bring a cheap but i mean like i guess that's, I guess that's – but you could also probably brought fruit. You could probably brought an easy, more accessible fruit or, like, the pineapple would be like that. It's just rare exotic fruit. Yeah. You're showing off, right? You're luxurious. You're fancy. You're showing off to your friends. Look how fancy I am. I got this fancy pineapple fruit. There are some stories about sailors putting it up, like, as a symbol of, like, I made made it home okay and it's this way is I'm okay. My husband's home. He's not home. There's some stuff about that in there. Not really clear. All kind of myths. But there is some stuff about, you know, if you sailed to the, you know, South America and got some fruit and came back, maybe you put some kind of symbol up saying you made it. Right. And this is where you'll see you know in the south especially there's fruit uh pineapple symbols are kind of like a welcoming symbol it's very much a hospitality hospitality um type type symbol right yeah um did we do the fun facts no we did not do fun facts all right so let do some fun facts. Then we'll take a break and then we'll come back and we'll talk specifically about how the pineapple is associated to swinging. Okay. All right. Let's do it. So let's knock out some fun facts that we have for you. Do you know how long it takes a pineapple to grow? I do not. Two years. Wow. Two years. I feel bad bad for the plant to like make a fruit for like wait like for it to be fully grown where you can pick it or right for the fruit to grow to where you can pick it yeah two years i feel bad i've let quite a few um pineapples go bad have you i have i don't like i'm cutting like peeling and doing all that um seems like a lot did you know that in most of the world the fruit is called the anonymous i'm not sure if i'm saying that right but it's a-n-a-n-a-s no i've never heard that anonymous i've only ever heard it called a pineapple and that means excellent fruit makes sense you don't care

did you know you can grow your own pineapple by cutting off the top and replanting it i mean it makes sense you can kind of do that with a lot of fruit but i would imagine you have to be in a warm climate to be able to act you know like right to actually make it grow yeah you do because i've tried to grow lemons you don't have to wait two years, though. So you buy a pineapple from the store, cut the top off, plant it in a green out somewhere warm, tropical, Amazon-like, and then wait two years. Maybe you'll have another pineapple. I feel like we should have a pineapple plant. We really should. We'd have to have a green. It would die. We wouldn't make it two years. No, we would not. It would definitely die before. We said that the pineapple, right? It's this rich, rare fruit, right? So if you come over to my house and I give you this pineapple, right? It's a thing that I covet. It's the thing that costs me a lot of money. It's a thing that probably is special to me. And I'm going to do what? I'm going to share it with you. This thing that means a lot to me, I'm going to share it with you because you must be close to me right i must trust you you must be a trusted friend we must be close so i'm going to share this this rare as if you would your wife thing right so yeah another symbolism here going on with the pineapple is my wife my partner not necessarily wife could be your wife could be your husband yeah is that you know something that means a lot to me it's something that i covet it's something that has lots of value right so me sharing that with people that i trust my friends that come over to my house or maybe to a club you know whatever um that's a good representation of that as well yeah so i i think there's all kinds of symbolism here that would lead us to believe why the pineapple is the fruit of of swingers yeah right let's talk a little bit about the upside down pineapple thing yeah right because we so we kind of can associate how we went from you know donald trump sailing across the ocean to get a pineapple to it now becoming the symbol of swingers

I don always heard like pre-internet pre all of that so i don't know like if there's truth in that or if that's just like urban legend i don't i don't know i have googled the the far reaches of the internet oh what did you find out to find the answer of the upside down pineapple okay fill us in i've done all the research yes i've read all the books i can't find any proof that that's true i can't find anything there is nothing we've talked to people that are older in age and they said hey you've been swinging for some of these people 40 years and they're like this is new. They were like, tell us about this pineapple. And they're like, what? Pineapple? Yeah, they have no idea what we're talking about. I don't know anything about pineapple. What are you talking about? Yeah. But the urban legend does go upside down. So the pineapple in general, from near as I can figure, is a symbol that could represent um people that are in

They're like, so you just, like, go to the grocery store and flip your pineapple and you just walk around like we laugh so hard because it's a joke would you do it though we have done it we have done it but it's always a joke but not because we are actively looking for people because it's funny right but people are so damn literal they like oh they're obsessed with this upside down pineapple thing they like like they're like i've put my pineapple upside down so nobody spoke to me like no shit like i don't know i guess like for me we we don't do a lot of seeking out in vanilla settings well i take that back we do zero we you know we said we pretty much separate our lives into vanilla world and swing world now because we've gotten popular and because of the plague is, we do have some mix. You know, like, but if we're at the grocery store, we're just at the fucking grocery store. Like, we're not. Now, if we did put an upside down pineapple in our cart at the grocery store, it's a joke because we do that almost every time we go shopping now. Not every time, but. No, we don't. Often when we that is never put on my front porch we've done it multiple times if a hot couple did approach us oh yeah but like right it would probably never okay but let's just be the odds of that happening are so freaking slim right it has never happened it is never and it is very unlikely we haven't even had like an unattractive like no one has ever like not even a single person would ever you know like or if we did it now everybody knows we have this podcast and this platform they would be like oh damn lacy's making a tiktok you know like in the grocery store can't they take that shit somewhere else yes um but i get i don't know i get so i laugh so hard about that okay what about if you see somebody wearing a pineapple shirt or a pineapple shorts is that i would never assume someone's a swinger never and people are like well i want to say something to them but i don't i would honestly we don't like we again we keep our vanilla life and our swinging life pretty separate. Like, we have vanilla friends and we have swinger friends. We do vanilla things with swinger friends, but we just don't cross those. Like, we don't have, like, a next-door neighbor. We don't try to hook up with our next-door neighbors. You know, like, we just keep things pretty separate. You know, if I'm getting my hair done and the girl next to me has a pineapple shirt, I might, like, look at it and be like, huh, I wonder.

I don't know i guess like if you want to be if you want to say something like if you just cannot help yourself the best thing to say is i like your hat if it's got a pineapple on it i like your hat yeah i like that pineapple i think you know if we were out at a bar and Kid Free and we saw a cute couple and they were wearing pineapple stuff, we might say something to them like, oh, I like it. Kind of point out whatever the item is with the pineapple on it just to see how their response was. I think a vanilla bar would be the only situation. Where you would approach them. Yeah, like I wouldn't say anything at the grocery store. I wouldn't say't say anything you know like we would have to be away from our family or kids and be in a situation to where we could have that conversation yeah correct and it's never happened no but we've definitely seen people that were like total now that to be fair when we were just in uh pittsburgh for the secret sensations thing kylie uh and brad and Brad and Joe and Maria met a couple at a bar. They did? That had pineapple stuff on and turned out they were swingers. That's awesome. Yeah. So, I mean, you know, it's not impossible. Yeah. We just don't. We don't find ourselves at a lot of, like, regular bars very often. Like, if we're going to go out, we're going to go out, like, with swingers or go out with, like, you know, at a a swingers club about the only time i could think of like where we go to like just regular bars is maybe if we go to like downtown nashville or something and then we don't give a shit we'll tell everybody that we're swingers the last time dan like passes out business cards and shit you know like and i think like especially in a destination like if you're if we're gone somewhere we don't give a shit yeah but like here at our house or like in our hometown we just don't behave that way no um so how do i guess while we're on that subject how would you you know this the pineapple is definitely a symbol if you see an upside down pineapple absolutely a symbol um but how would if you if somebody's listening to this because they want to figure out and unlock the code of meeting other swingers because of this pineapple thing, how would you really recommend meeting?

I would not use the pineapple thing as an indicator of swinging. I mean, if your grandmother has a pineapple or your cousin or somebody two houses down, just let them enjoy their pineapple. As I was researching for this podcast episode, I was reading an article and they were talking you know the pineapple and it's funny because they actually used not one of our tiktoks but but uh malia snm one of her tiktoks it was a new york post um article um and it was talking about you know these symbols and swingers and stuff like that and this is why i was reading it but they're talking about destination and traveling and how there's a lot of people are interested in in going on vacations and having an experience. Makes total sense. And, you know, that maybe someday in the near future that people having sexual experiences won't be as taboo or misunderstood or might be more socially acceptable. Yeah, like if you have small children and, like, let's say you don't have any friends or family that you can really rely on for child care and it's hard for you just to get away for like a date night let alone like a whole swinging adventure i can totally see if you slip away for one week a year to a naughty place like desire or temptations or hedo i can see where i can see where that the appeal of that yeah and it seems like america is getting to a point where we're just we're getting more sexually open um and you know the idea of couples wanting to have sex with other people um although still very taboo and still very there are real consequences to being out in the public and sharing that you're into that kind of thing um i think people are getting to be more open-minded to it and like you're saying slipping away on a vacation where nobody knows and and having an experience like that is probably uh enticing to a lot of people it's enticing to me and we do it all the time probably a lot of people uh listening might be uh considering having an experience like that and tell you, when we meet couples, and especially newer couples, they are very excited to have that experience, right? They're almost like forcing it, right? They want to have it. Maybe they rush and jump in and do some of the wrong things because they're just so focused on, like, I want to do something fun.
