Another attack of the "should"s.

Guffaw @ computers and random

"Computers do not just randomly do things."

My mileage differs.

"Did you try again and then it sent? If so, you can send me a ticket and I can look into it."

Of course I tried again. That's how conversations work. And, yes, it was successfully sent and received.

There's nothing to look into. Occasionally the message system disappears what you've written instead of delivering it. Not often enough that most of us make copies, but occasionally. You've been told this, but you keep offering the same explanations that don't actually apply.

"If someone doesn't answer you and you are interested in them, just send them another message (after a few days). That is what I would do"

In almost 20 years of using these forums, you are the only person that I have seen offer up the contact them again advice.

It's not good advice Wayne. You have been around long enough to know better as well.

"There are some instances where the site will intentionally not send your messge..."

Plus the random instance of the site unintentionally not sending your message.

I sent a message to a forum regular yesterday - one where none of the listed conditions apply - and, as sometimes happens, it just vanished instead of sending.

Whatever.

For those newer to this site, there used to be an email system. You could read messages without opening them, which made it look to the sender that the messages had not been seen. So, reassuring senders doesn't appear to ever have been something SLS values.

We belong to a different lifestyle site and the message system there has a sent mail tab. The mail icon is an envelope. Unopened is a closed envelope with an exclamation point, read is an opened envelope with a green check mark, replied is an open envelope with a arrow, deleted is either an open envelope (read) or closed envelope (unread) with a red "X" covering the envelope.

Really easy to see if the recipient just deleted or read and deleted without a reply.

This feature would be beneficial as it would indicate recipients level of interest. Read and deleted, no reply, they lack courtesy. Helps our decision making as well.

Closed means delivered unread. Opened means read. And opened

I agree 100%, but don't hold your breath on any changes happening. I broached this subject on a post a year or so ago, and was told by management that if I sent it, it was always properly delivered, so I shouldn't question it. I also got snippy replies from several of the "regulars" telling me to accept the fact that single guys like myself don't get many responses, and get over it. I tried to explain that I wasn't asking about responses and but just wanted some sort of confirmation that the message had been delivered at all, but all I got was crickets.

A system like you describe (delivery confirmation, read/unread, etc.) would help senders figure out what they're doing right and wrong with their approach and profile. Again, don't expect any changes, but know that at least one person is on your side.

Tried searching this topic, couldn't find. Apologies if already discussed.

Messages: Occasionally, we've sent messages that don't show as sent, just vanish. Sent a second message to later have both show up. Makes us look a bit desperate.

Message Feature: Have an icon that shows the message has been RECEIVED, READ, and/or DELETED. We've found even profiles proclaiming to respond to all messages, even if not interested, don't.

This feature would be take the guess work out of sending a follow-up.
