sls Wayne ,It would seem you would be more liable for "Trafficking" with the Paid Members than with the Free Members ? I think its all BS any way just another way to reduce service to increase profit , with out raising the membership price ?
FREE MEMBERS - now completely restricted
We agree it is a poorly worded law. But it was aimed at traffickers in human beings. Specifically for sexual commerce.
There is a possible interpretation that would see me running afoul of FOSTA if I introduced two friends for a blind date via emails.
I am guessing that I would be judged innocent if I gained or stood to gain nothing by my service.
However, if either party gave me cash for the introduction FOSTA or certainly any number of pandering laws would apply.
AGAIN
If you own, manage, or operate an interactive computer service (an information service, system, or access software provider that provides or enables computer access by multiple users to a computer server, including specifically a service or system that provides access to the Internet), you should be concerned about the potential liability that you could incur due to H.R. 1865
Wayne, I would still like to know just how charging to facilitate hookups is somehow less guilty of trafficking than allowing people to do their own for free.
<p>lcmim,</p>
<p>New laws were passed (FOSTA). The owner did this to help the site better comply with those laws.</p>

How many of you remember a time when you were trying to decide whether or not to jump into the LS?
That is just the position of many of the free members.
I just do not get the hostility toward them.
If a free member can not email or instant messages us paid members what is the sense of having it an option on their profile? Why have it set up that us paid members can instant message them or email them when they can not even read it or reply back to a paid member Fyi it's a lot of wasted time on us paid members trying to contact a free member and will now be in possible to contact a free member. So the option should be removed completely off of all free members profiles. As a matter of fact why have free members? Now it's just going to clog the site up with people paid members can not have contact with. It's not right having free members see our profile but can not contact us. Maybe come up with a system that paid members can pay an additional fee to have contact with free member like other sites do.
It is the trafficking itself that is the issue. You just get into another set of offenses if minors are involved.
The whole FOSTA law applies equally if you are 14 or 91. If you own, manage, or operate an interactive computer service (an information service, system, or access software provider that provides or enables computer access by multiple users to a computer server, including specifically a service or system that provides access to the Internet), you should be concerned about the potential liability that you could incur due to H.R. 1865
I bought the credit card reasoning until my 14 year old opened his own checking account and got a mastercard debit card he could use to 'prove' he was 21.
The whole OF AGE thing has NOTHING to do with FOSTA. Using the internet to promote sexual contacts for money (Trafficking) is what it is about.
I do not care if they make money. I already paid my dues. Just allow freedom of who I wish to talk to.
I am still wondering how charging folks to facilitate liaisons is somehow more legal than letting it go on for free. The whole "We gotta do it because of FOSTA is a smoke screen.
Come on guys, the site has zero recourse due to the legal environment, look at craigslist for instance. The very beginning of what they had to start to prove is that everyone is legal including old enough to be here. Without charging a fee, and getting the requisite credit card, there would have been no way to prove the person was who they said they were or prove how old they were etc except through the means of a credit card or by emailing some sort of identification. How would you like a site like this to have a copy of your legal id just sitting on a computer ripe for the taking...
The only thing they continue to do wrong here is to not be verbally upfront of what's going on behind the scenes like updates, outages, legal issues, etc... They would save themselves a lot of grief if they posted on the front page whatever messages the users should know instead of just fixing it behind the scenes and leave everyone in the dark, technology companies just don't work that way anymore.
I agree.
Unfortunately if you are a Lifetime member like we are then you have no recourse.
That is not what we signed up for and feel cheated out of a feature that we used. If we had known this was coming we would never have subscribed.
Thanks for clarifying. That's a stupid decision from SLS. I shouldn't be limited as I'm a paid member. I'm also in a rural area which limits members, so we should be able to contact them.
Paid members who wish to contact free members are screwed IM, or post.
Okay, just a little help. From reading the forum post I understand free members can't read or send emails. What about IMs, can they read those? Can they reply to am IM?
Thanks
Wayne - I have a free couples profile for when a female friend visits. You can receive an email but the message is blocked unless you choose to upgrade. For how we use it, having a free profile is now basically useless. It allows me to see who is attending an event where I would otherwise be blocked as a single male but since we are unable to communicate I can do the same thing by logging onto her paid single account so the free account is no longer used.
<p>"Can anyone here answer my question--Can free users receive and read messages?"</p>
<p>You can send a message to a free profile. They will know they have a message, but they will not be able to read it or respond to it unless they become a paid member.</p>

At least you're not judgmental about it SRQ... there are many reasons someone would choose to be a free member, some of them are valid. I would never buy before you try, simple as that.
Can anyone here answer my question--Can free users receive and read messages?
So many on here crack me up on this topic. It’s all about the money. Glad the cheap ass FREE cheapskates are gone. If you can’t pay up the small amount of money GTFO........
I am a single man and ever since this new policy has been in place, the amount of exchange with new members has gone down to almost zero. On the other hand, I have private communication with members I've play with and most clubs, etc can be reached and found using google. Not good.
I am still wondering how allowing PAID members to communicate gets around the law.
The whole thing was based on human trafficking, which as far as I can tell involves payment.
It would seem that there is a benefit to allowing free members limited access like before. Heck, we were free members and then decided we wanted to be able to more easily contact folks. I know the new law is pretty restrictive, but allowing some contact seems to be in the best interests of all.
Bimmer ,
AMEN.
