To the OP, we hear ya. We thoughtfully consider the other person's profile before writing or opening pics. We have in our profile some reasons for our looking but not opening pics: pics of only one of them, weights listed as 0lbs. However, equally important is what the other couple has listed for age range preference, sexual preferences, and more. If they browsed us but we're older than their upper bound or if the husband is more than 15 years older than my wife or the wife is super-bi and that's what they're looking for, then we don't open pics or write. Some people call it, "staying in your lane."
The best success and fun we've had though is going to big club or hotel events with lots of people signed up. The statistical likelihood of something interesting happening goes way up ;-)
