Correct me if im mistaken but isn’t not inflation an indicator that the economy is stagnant?

Im not sure where i have seen that but Think zero inflation is symptomatic of a problem.

If we go by this website ht tps://ww w.usinflationcalculator.co m/

The inflation rate between 2021 and 2024 is 16.5% in the aggregate.

This website htt ps://smartasset.co m/investing/inflation-calculator has it at 15.76%

The BLS has it at 17%

The Federal Reserve has it at 16%.

Do we see a pattern here. Sure, some things went up more than others. I think I remember you talking about the price of canned diced tomatoes at one time.

I know that you "feel" like it is so much higher, but there it is.

Yeah, 2outdoor doesn't exactly understand how markets work.

The China v America is a topic I've got some interest in. I've settled into a middle ground, but I'm open to other ideas.

I do buy some things direct from China. I got two camping stoves for $5. Better than paying $20+ for one at REI. The exact same one.

Am I betraying America? Obviously not. I'm responding to the market. And with my savings, I can buy food from local family farms, handmade items, support veteran-owned shops, etc.

I recently bought something handmade from Austria. Is that betraying America too? Or is it just China?

(On the topic of handmade, you can pretty frequently find "artisan" items on Etsy that are actually just from AliExpress. Quite amusing.)

This garbage that China is going to own the U.S. because I bought a $5 shirt from them is boogy-man nonsense.

“You didn't ask about 2022. Your question was specifically about the current claim of inflation at about 2%.”

I’m sure you are aware that inflation numbers are year over year, but ultimately are accumulative.

The inflation number for October is 2.6% based on the end of October of 2023. That is on top of the inflation in 2023 and 2022 which is why i mentioned that. The biggest chunk of that 40% increase on your can of peas came in 2022. It went up more in 2023 but it only went up ~2.6% this year.

My point is, the supply chain issues caused the huge jump in pricing, the current administration was able to slow it down to a reasonable rate, that is what you said you would accept from trump, why not Biden?

“What I am also aware of is that SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE to bring more manufacturing into the US…”

Tariffs won't do that, because that's not how tariffs and trade agreements work.

I'm not against tariffs on Chinese goods, particularly in those sectors where the government is offering support that allows those goods to be sold at prices far under those from American manufacturers. That's where tariffs work best - offsetting unfair pricing from foreign companies - but that is not exactly what happened during the first Trump administration.

We got a trade war with China, but we also got one with India, and Canada and Mexico also imposed retaliatory tariffs. Tariffs from Canada and Mexico meant food went up, as did lumber, and US agriculture was screaming so loudly about the tariffs imposed on their exports that the US government handed out money to farmers like the drunk guy with a fistful of dollars at a strip club.

Plus, food banks got large shipments of useful items like unpitted plums in syrup. (Okay, fine, I'm being sarcastic about the usefulness.)

In no case did US manufacturing benefit.

“For the record. I don't recall ever blaming Biden specifically for inflation.”

“All the while, staring at a fucking can of peas that are 40% higher than 4 years ago. That I do blame on the current admin.”

Do you see the contradiction?

“All most people wanna do is bitch about Trumps plan, while not offering up anything other than more bitching.”

The CHIPS act was one positive step that brings tech jobs and manufacturing to the US. This is a much better option than tariffs which, if you read my second post on the subject, is bad for the economy in so many ways.

BTW, I’m not saying there are easy solutions and I am all for reducing our dependence on communist countries like China and Russia. I don’t believe tariffs are the answer, building more factories in the US may be and that is what Biden focused on.

@Gumby...You’re pissed about a can of peas bring 40% more.

I see your reading comprehension hasn't improved. As per usual you took one line out of a post and made it what you want.

I'm not going to bother to correct you. You wouldn't comprehend that enough figure out what I said.

Well Gumby. I hope you enjoy being under Chinese rule someday.

“What I am also aware of is that SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE to bring more manufacturing into the US…”

So you support the Chips and science act?

“..,,curb the Americans appetite for cheap shit made elsewhere.”

How do you force people to buy American? That will cost them more. And you’re the one telling us how bad everyone is doing financially. You’re pissed about a can of peas bring 40% more. How much would a cordless tool from DeWalt cost if it was 100% made in the US?

“I think the pandemic bullshit gave manufacturers and retailers an excuse to raise prices and of course. They're not going to walk any of it back if they don't have to and are not pushed to do so.”
Whaaaaatttttt

You want the government to tell corporations they’re making too much money and to stop?

What kind of Conservative are you?

That isn’t government overreach?

I would have loved to have seen the GOP reaction if Biden actually did this.

Montpelier, OH, Us

@scamp...Do you consider the post pandemic supply chain issues a good reason why inflation spiked in 2022?
As for tariffs, economists generally agree that tariffs will increase inflation. Think of it logically,

You didn't ask about 2022. Your question was specifically about the current claim of inflation at about 2%. I specifically answered that question. But yes, Something like a pandemic would also give Trump a pass on higher numbers. (WHICH I GAVE BIDEN A PASS ON AS WELL)

For the record. I don't recall ever blaming Biden specifically for inflation. I think the pandemic bullshit gave manufacturers and retailers an excuse to raise prices and of course. They're not going to walk any of it back if they don't have to and are not pushed to do so.

My biggest bitch about inflation is the cooked up numbers you see and hear. All the while, staring at a fucking can of peas that are 40% higher than 4 years ago. That I do blame on the current admin. And yes I fully expect to see the same cooked up numbers from the future admin. The hope that I have is that while reading the cooked up numbers. The price will actually be going down. I do completely understand that the President can't tell Krogers what to charge for groceries. I do though think they can put a little public heat on manufacturers and retailers to quit using covid as their excuse. The pandemic is fucking long over people. The supply chain is restored.

As for your explanation of tariffs. Thank you but I am already aware of what they are and how they affect things.

What I am also aware of is that SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE to bring more manufacturing into the US and curb the Americans appetite for cheap shit made elsewhere.

Will it work? Probably not like I would like, but I haven't heard any other ideas from anywhere. All most people wanna do is bitch about Trumps plan, while not offering up anything other than more bitching.

So I will just say this. If anyone is content with allowing China to own the United States lock stock and barrel. Then fine. Go ahead and bitch about tariffs. If anyone would like to ease up our dependence on Chinese made goods and bring more manufacturing back to the US. Then let's give this a shot or figure out an alternate idea and find a way to push that agenda.

BTW Scamp. I believe it was you that asked me if I shopped for USA made goods over foreign made. I absolutely do! It's fucking hard though. There is so much that I simply can't find that's made in the USA.

“The fact is that tariff barriers weaken the middle class. In the short term, they raise consumer prices. In the medium term, they weaken the nation’s manufacturing competitiveness and undermine middle-class jobs. In the long term, they inhibit innovation and the emergence of the next generation of middle-class jobs, weakening our children’s toe-hold in the middle class and sapping the nation’s prosperity over time.”

“In my opinion he needs to do better. ORRRR..... At least have a good reason why not. Tariffs etc. That is something I'm hoping this admin can deliver on.”

Do you consider the post pandemic supply chain issues a good reason why inflation spiked in 2022?

As for tariffs, economists generally agree that tariffs will increase inflation. Think of it logically, if a gadget from China has a landed cost of $100 and gets hit with a 50% tariff, the new cost is $150. If the wholesaler wants to retain the same margin, the cost to a retailer goes from $200 to $300. And if the retailer wants to hold the same margin, the retail price rises from $400 to $600.

And if you think the wholesaler and retailer should absorb the cost which cuts into their margin, where do they recoup the losses? They cut wages among other costs. Not helpful to the middle class.

Another moron down.

Amusingly, a prominent voice here blocked me, despite me addressing them just once.

It's almost like you're a stupid liar.

Oh, wait.

Enjoy your hamster wheel

The leftists are stepping up their tactic of attempting to make your own claims.

Because they're liars and "useful idiots".

Oh, the tactic where you assert I've made a claim when I haven't.

That's honest argument.

"No way! How?"

I dont remember the exact word I used, but I called someone who is no longer here some name, asshole or whatever.

Then I can't post. No notice.

I reach out and am told I called someone a bad name. They did not specify who.

I figured it was X.

I went back to X posting history, and sent admin several instances of X calling people that exact same word.

No joy. I served out my suspension, whatever it was...
