I remember reading that people were shocked by the Gettysburg Address, because politicians at the time were expected to be verbose and give long, exhausting speeches. Some even thought Lincoln’s address was disrespectful.

Growing up in Michigan we remember President Ford very well and a quote of his still makes us smile.

“I am a Ford, not a Lincoln” is a quote by Gerald Ford that he said after being sworn in as vice president in 1973. The full quote includes, “I am a Ford, not a Lincoln. My addresses will never be as eloquent as Mr. Lincoln's. But I will do my very best to equal his brevity and his plain speaking”.

Wow. Met at the Wishy Washy laundromat on Dolly Parton's first day in Nashville. Dolly Parton was 18, and they were married for almost 60 years.

“ Richard Nixon was president when I was born, but Jimmy Carter was the first president that I remember being president. I also remember my father explaining to me why he wasn't going to be president any more.”

Same. I was born in ‘69, and don’t have any memory of Ford, but I remember Carter. I also remember the news every night counting up to the 444 days the Iran hostages were held.

"Perhaps carbon monoxide?"

That's where I'd place my bet.

What's odd is that Gene Hackman, his wife and his dog are all found dead at their home and one of the articles I read about it said "Foul play was not suspected". Should I be posting this under WTF?

If it were just him and his wife I'd be thinking murder/suicide, but the dog too? Perhaps carbon monoxide?

Roberta Flack had such a voice, and she never had to belt it out, or yell, or scream. She could sing emotionally and powerfully using just her normal singing voice.

I also like the David Lynch version best.

David Lynch.

And I still like his version of Dune, even though it's kind of like Salvador Dali's dumpster fire.

I think 8-inch pretty much hit it on the head regarding Jimmy Carter. He was a fine and decent man. He was not a strong leader. I remember hearing his "Moral Malaise" speech when I was in High School and thinking it was disturbingly unmoored for a President. It seemed to be sort of a "kids nowadays" or "what are you gonna do?" sort of musing more appropriate for a barbecue. the Iran hostage crisis was the nail in the coffin. I have often wondered whether the Iranian regime regrets torpedoing Carter and boosting Reagan.

Jimmy Carter was not The Best President.

But Jimmy Carter was the Best Person to ever be President.

I was in Catholic school and because I was tall for my age I sat in the back of the room. I remember as if were yesterday a little old nun came in and I heard her tell my nun the president had been shot. Needless to say prayers were started immediately .
