Most people don't understand absolute or relative risk.

Even more people don't understand statistics...

Btw

I know people are going to post their own anecdotes (like Inez did) as refutations. That's not how statistics or risk work.

Russian roulette is dangerous, yes? We can all agree on that?

If I told you that I played it and didn't get killed, would you accept that as evidence that it's not dangerous?

Risk is a statistics game. Some come out winners, and some come out losers. Some contributions to risk can be controlled; others can't.

You're all going to hate me for this...

While I can't attest to his numbers the general spirit of what ncal said (in this incredible instance) is more or less correct. There are basically 3 reasons for risk of any cancer: things done to the body (environment, diet, radiation etc), genetics, and age. The only one you have control over is the first.

The weighted risks of all 3 change with time, and as people get older age become the dominant factor. This has nothing to do with what level of fitness you are at. It's just time. People who develop cancer (especially breast cancer) young are usually genetically predisposed.

Cancer is the result of a series of genetic mistakes being made when your cells are reproducing. The risk is cumulative throughout your life. Lots of things contribute to that risk. How the result of the risk turns out is random.

You might be the best driver in the safest car who drives only in the best conditions. Your risk is far lower than a drunkard who drives a lot during snowstorms with no brakes. But that lower risk doesn't mean you can't get killed anyway, and it doesn't mean that the drunken idiot is doomed to die in a fiery wreck.

I have a sudden urge to kiss both Lady and Tramp.

Alpharetta, GA

But hey...look at the brigjt side nutcal!

You have nothing to worry bout. Nothing. Since cancer looks for normal cells to mutate, I'm thinking you're home free.

Nothing normal to find, nothing at risk. Carry on.

Bigduke you must understand those stats on breast cancer. 80 to 90% of those breast cancers are because of old age and the body just wearing out.
Breast Cancer in young women in their 30's is from defective genes from birth.

Used to drive by Neptune's Net a lot, never took the time to stop in. Missed opportunities.....the story of my life.

Brophy's in Santa Barbara and Ventura are frickin' awesome for seafood. Used to be my go-to location for out-of-towners wanting a good dinner.

The Rock Store, Neptune's Net, Pier View Lounge, and Sagebrush Cantina were all regular Sunday afternoon stops for me during the year and a half I lived in T.O.
Had a lot of really good times and made a lot of really good friends

Surprised how easy this was to find, posted by me in the Random Facts About Myself thread, November 15, 2011:

"I like pie.

Chocolate pie. Fruit pies, like apple or blueberry or cherry pie. Boston Cream pie. Key lime pie. Chicken pot pie. Fried pies. Pie with ice cream on top.

Did I mention that I like pie?"

Im also surprised I left out pecan pie and pumpkin pie. I like those pies too.

I didn't have anything substantial to add to the conversation, but I just like saying "I like pie"
