It depends on the flogger. There are multiple choices for materials, length of the tails, width, etc. and you can definitely get very stingy floggers.
It's hard to cause much pain with the suede flogger, even from full on hits. Once in a while you'll strike with just the very end of the tails and that will sting a little, but the intent is really not to do that. Over time, it will leave a bottom nice and red and warm.

We got a 100 tail suede flogger on E-bay and it's good for me (beginner) and does the job. It was ~$35 as I recall. It will lose tails over time from use, but I think that's the nature of suede floggers in general.

Mediums are generally elk, moose, suede and horse hair. That is for a more thudy hit, except for horse hair, that has a little more sting to it.
High/Heavy intensity would be bull and buffalo. The falls on those floggers would be thick. Those can be both very thudy and very stingy.

Forever - Thought you had a suede flogger. We have one and it's a lot milder than some of the heavier shiny leather ones we've seen. The heavier ones also give more of a "thunk".
For now, the suede is fine for us as it's pretty safe and good to practice with.

As you eluded to, you can experiment. In retail they use a particular paddle to move product around on the shelves. Those work really well if you can find them. The yard stick may be more satisfying that the cane, Some things will surprise you, like the silicone spatula, and you can always try making your own toys. I have though that a flogger using surgical rubber tubing might work well,
Depends on how much sting you want. Ping pong paddles work, so do wooden cheeseboards with handles, so do things you can buy at your local sex megastore. I don't like stinging sensations much at all, so prefer floggers, belts, and whips, but de gustibus.

Ended up ordering a cane that was advertised as rattan. And there are no segments in it like there would be in bamboo. However, its like a 2' long chopstick. Same material/diameter and just has some athletic tape for a grip. For the $5-$7 I'm not losing any sleep over it, but I'm curious if this is a valid version of a cane or more of a cheap knock off? Advice on how/where to find a very basic but maybe better quality cane would be great. My wife isn't a fan. But at least for display/educational purposes it'd be nice to have. Thanks!
Had a blast last night with the flogger! Started just using it on the couch, then tried it on my arm. Then she got naked and bent over. Started very lightly with forward then backward circles. She enjoyed it and asked if I could go harder so I upped the speed a bit which she liked even more. We have a riding crop that we bought at Tractor Supply. It does work well if you're looking for a more controlled sting. As for practice, to some degree you can practice on yourself. It's good to see what these things feel like on yourself before whacking someone else with them.
