It's because the underlying technology (socket.io) uses websockets to asynchronously communicate between clients. Most competent developers add logic that resyncs the messages properly on each end. However, SLS did not.
Merging of message posts
GGMM - Wow. I'm only seeing the merged message thing maybe 10% of the time in a fairly interactive dialog. Might have to do with how many messages cross on the wire.
Seems to happen if we are each sending a message at the same time.
Yep. It happens about 75% of the time for me. If you back out and go back in, the problem magically disappears.
I have a support ticket in, but I can't get the follow-up to send, because of course I can't.
No, but we have received IMs about wanting to merge.

Yep, merging with previous. This IM crap is beyond ridiculous.
Has anyone else noticed that the new Message sometimes merges messages? What I mean by that is if I'm sending a message at the sane time as I'm receiving one, my message actually shows up at the end of their message instead of as a separate one coming from me.
Doesn't happen all the time but I've seen it happen at least 2-3 times now. Might be worth a ticket if it's more widespread and reproducing it might be difficult.
