Just Wondering

This is a two part JW, the second part of which could be a WTF:

JW what people think about the current "De-fund the police" debate.

At first glance, this would seem extremely divisive and hopelessly radical on its face, however…

One of the first people I ever heard speak on behalf of Black lives matter, back when it was a nascent “organization” still barely deserving of the term, was a young woman (I don’t recall her name) who stepped into the role of a regional organizer and spokeswoman. She spoke, among other things on what at the time was a rumored radical goal of the organization: defunding the police. I was surprised by how focused, persuasive, and above all calm and un-radical she came across (I suspect she has gone far in the years since). The goal as she articulated it was not to punish the police for brutalizing impoverished minority neighborhoods , but rather to point out that the brutalization of such neighborhoods was an inevitable consequence of addressing the symptoms of poverty, including crime and drugs, by increasing resources which led to increased incarceration of community members.

One could argue that, in a time when we seem to be willing to abandon fiscal restraint wholesale (and arguably fiscal sanity itself) in order to protect an economy that seems hell bent on increasing wealth disparity at every turn, we should be able to, if necessary find the resources to do both policing and community development work (libraries, athletic programs, safe spaces for kids, domestic violence shelters, drug and alcohol treatment programs, etc.). However, I was persuaded by this young woman’s presentation of the notion that it is at least possible, that the “pressure” of policing must in fact be reduced in poor and minority communities as a goal in itself.

All this said, I am completely baffled by both the headlines, and everything I have read about the City of Minneapolis plans to “dismantle their police department”. They do not seem to be talking about “remaking”, “disintegrating and re-integrating”, “re-imagining” or “re-constructing” their police department, or re-directing some of it’s funding ,but rather simply “dismantling” it. Can someone explain to me, based on what they have heard, WTF Minneapolis is thinking? The particularly offensive, insulting and hyperbolic (if otherwise typical) charge of mental instability that the LA police union just directed at Mayor Garcetti based on his desire to redirect police funds to community development, would not necessarily seem so outrageous to me had it been directed at the City Council of Minneapolis.

A friend of mine had her car setup to read her text messages aloud when they came in if she was driving. I sent her an out of the blue message one morning that said something like:

"Hey. I was just sitting here and got to thinking about your vagina. How is she doing? My penis sends its regards."

This sort of message from me to her is not uncommon, and when I did it before she laughed and said it was funny and made her day. But this time it read it in the car while she had her parents in it. Another time it read it to her while she was in line at airport security.

She modified it to now somehow ask before reading texts from certain people.

That sounds like an insanely, or potentially delightfully, dangerous feature. I once left a brief voice mail for a business associate using the bluetooth in my vehicle, and then engaged in a spirited, bombastic and salacious rant for about ten minutes with a passenger, only to realize that I had not hung the phone up correctly. Thankfully it was not a discussion of the lifestyle.

My understanding is that they inadvertently activated the Facebook Live feature, which puts a live video feed from your phone to your Facebook page.

I have only used this feature once that I recall, to show a snippet of a concert that I attended. But I have seen lots of people use it.

"I agree with your correlation of Trumps Administration permitting fascism to Obama's spreading racism. "

Your correlation actually. I don't think Obama was particularly racist. But thanks for bringing up Racism....

JW what the hell is the deal with racist assholes and Facebook? Over the weekend there were three incidents of Texas County Supervisors who made Facebook posts alleging that 1) George Floyd's arrest and murder was a hoax, 2) George Soros paid both white cops to beat black protestors and black people to protest "because race wars keep the sheep in line" and 3) posting the famous MLK quote that "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"... next to the image of a banana.

Then there was the former Naval Academy Alumni Association Trustee from Florida who somehow managed to live stream a video of he and his wife watching the news about the Floyd protests and frequently using racial slurs "including the 'n-word'" . Now I'm not a Facebook guy and never have been so, could someone who is please explain to me how it is even possible to actualize such a monumental catastrophuck of a social media faceplant?

Catching up...

"but is fascism a political system or an economic one?"

I would argue that it is a political ideology that is heavily based on economic matters. Notably, from my earlier list, self reliant nationalism, economic isolationism, and anti trade sentiment.

I guess my point, which was lost, is that discussions of fascism tend to focus too much on the Nazis, being the poster children of fascism and on their particular brand of white supremacist racism. It tends to be used as an insult. This distracts, in my view, from the very real and enduring tenets of fascism that are alive and well in America, and which predate the Nazis by decades.

Of course I wasn't saying that.

I am saying the following:

Most cops are good in terms of their own actions.

Many good cops nevertheless look the other way when it comes to bad cops, for a number of reasons, most of them based upon self-preservation.

My Dad has his own regrets when it comes to looking the other way, and wishes he could have been a better cop, especially when he was younger and more "on the street".

The TLDR answer:

No.

VAB- are you saying that all cops are bad except your dad? JW?

I stand by the premise that cops are people and are generally reflective of the community they come from, there are some that are a little dirty, some that are criminal, but for the most part they become cops because of an altruistic ideal of protecting the community and helping others, like healthcare workers or firefighters. And like most careers, after a while some become jaded or bitter and are just there to draw a check or find a disability. But for the most part, cops are good people, the kind I can relate to and would generally trust. I base that on my experience, yours may be different.

Bucket, I said HFT, but yes, like SLO. ...Passive-aggressive...Sweeping generalizations/judgement...anger, and then, the call for calm and unity. To borrow and paraphrase from his/her/their own narrative ...a little too tightly wound for someone from the west...

Yeah those last 4 posts by MJ were odd, very reminiscent of old SLO's bourbon rants back some months ago.
