The Girl With All the Gifts. Haven't read the book, but the movie is pretty decent. You know that the zombie genre has gone mainstream when Glenn Close does a zombie flick.
The original Romero trilogy is still my favorite, but The Return of the Living Dead is a guilty pleasure.

I did haunted hayride acting for eight seasons in a row. I was a pro at jump scares and had mastered the art of 'stand still and stare scare.' I can't watch contemporary horror - too many jump scares, mostly - so I stick with reading. I bounced on the John Ringo series (pretty sure it was written for manly men), but aside from the Mira Grant novels, I also love M. R. Carey's The Girl With All the Gifts, Justina Ireland's Dread Nation and Diana Rowland's White Trash Zombie series.

28 Days Later remains my favorite. I have to be careful not to squeeze my dog too tightly during the church scene.

These were at a Hannaford supermarket where we do about half of our grocery shopping. I suspect you wouldn't see these at a Whole Foods.
I'm a huge fan of World War Z and the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks. WWZ is the only book that actually gave me nightmares since I read some short stories in Alfred Hitchcock's horror anthologies when I was in elementary school. The WWZ Brad Pitt film is absolutely awful and every copy should be killed with fire and then strangled with the intestines of the screenwriters.
The other zombie series I enjoy reading is the John Ringo Black Tide Rising series. Totally implausible and inaccurate, even for a zombie series (hey Ringo, it's the "British Army" not "Royal Army", only the RAF and Royal Navy have the word Royal in the name), but a lot of fun (Trixie the USMC M1 Abrams is practically a character itself).

Also, sort of OT, the best zombie series I've read - and I've read a lot - is the Newsflesh books by Mira Grant/Seanan McGuire

I honestly did work with a Selena a few years ago. She was ten years my junior, half Puerto Rican and half German, about 5' 1", an Army Reservist and feisty... She was not one to fuck with! :-D

When you're fighting zombies, it helps to have a sense of humor. Unless yours runs to pretending you've become a zombie. If that happens, someone's gonna shoot you. So, let's test for that too.
