Phantom Notification

@Wayne - So was the polling looking for new messages thought to be causing the site reliability issues when the site got busy on the weekends?

Another area that they do polling is for logging out inactive users. It seems that gets turned off or at least extended on the weekends. Normally I see it log me off after about 20-30 mins of inactivity, but just noticed a couple hours where it didn't log me out.

I'm not seeing any issues when I test it. That counter will only update at login and when you go into your Messages list. If you are on the homepage or forums or any other pages, it will never update, even if you refresh the page over and over. Only the Login and selecting "Messages" triggers the check for new mail.

Smart. I probably won't bother, since a 12 hour delay or whatever makes no difference in my life, but if I was looking for people it would be a good work around.

I've set the message inbox as my home page to make life easier. ;-)

I've been back a couple of weeks after a 2ish month break and that's happened twice to me. Log on and the red message thing isn't lit up. Check later and there are messages from the night before. I just thought it was a new "improvement" that got passed off (like almost everything does) as either an improvement or not really the nuisance it is.

Sorry - missed that detail.

Maybe something is broken?

Stranger things have happened. ;-)

Youre saying it should refresh when I log in ... I did that ... I did log in. Then moved around a couple pages for a couple mins, then went to messages and the notification showed. Message was sent 4 hours earlier

Ed & Brittaney - I think they've changed the notification to only refresh when you first log in and then when you go to the messages tab. So you should see a notification if a messages was sent before you log in. But if a message was sent shortly after you logged in you wouldn't know about it until you check the messages tab. If you are working in the messages tab then you'll see the notification change as you receive new messages.

Not terribly useful IMHO but supposedly it uses less system resources so that the website is more stable.

Just happened again .. .cruising along in SLS, opening various things, no notifications, open the message tab and Bammm! it tells us we have 6 messages ... the joke was on us, as it was only 1 message sent 4 hours earlier

Parkville, MD, Usa

Yep we had that also ... no notification on tab. Then opened tab and bam, had a message

The last two days we’ve noticed the message notifications not working. We login and there’s nothing indicating we have messages which we found odd being a party weekend. It wasn’t until we opened the message tab then BAM red circle with number and all the waiting messages. Anyone else noticing this issue?

Wayne, I am un able to loat back that far? I would like to get to that message not only to read it but clear it. I am not sure why the notification only came up 8 9 months later

Wayne, wouldn't clicking on the "New" tab work as well rather than scrolling through 9 screens?

I have the red icon saying I have 1 unread message but when I open my messages there is none?

mayhem - recently I've noticed that if I'm in Messages going back and forth with someone that sometimes the new message indicator number gets confused if our exchange is fast and furious. If I reply quickly and exit (go check on forums, perhaps) then sometime when I go back to messages it shows a new message but I've already replied.

Thanks Wayne. Mystery solved. Only remaining thing was that there was a red circle with a "1" for that profile in my messages, but I have seen times where I send a message to someone and it counts that as a new message and makes it look like it came from that person.

That was confusing. It took me a couple of minutes to figure this out. That is not a response from that other member. They have not responded. The "ty." is the last few characters from the message that you sent to them.

The main message listing shows you a few characters from the last message sent. If the length of that message is 255 characters or less, it shows you the first few characters of the message. If the length of the message is greater than 255 characters, it shows you the last few characters of the message. Your message was just over 255 characters (258), so it showed you the last few characters, which was only "ty." It's just a coincidence that it is the abbreviation for 'Thank you'.

Bird, no bird, bird is back. Hard to keep track ;-)

I did have something odd regarding this happen a couple days ago. I sent a message to a forum poster. On the main Message page I can see he responded back with "ty.", but when I click on the link for that message I don't see it. The only message showing is mine to him.

I was on yesterday and was surprised to see the bird appearing as I was actually chatting with someone else. Usually you have to go to messages to see if you have any.

The "Flying birdie" was switched back to indicating that you have new mail a few months ago, so if you see that animation, you should also have a number in a red circle indicating how many unread messages you have. If you do not see the unread message on the first page, try scrolling down the page and selecting "Load more contacts" at the bottom. It could be several pages deep.

If someone sends you a message and then a block is placed (by either one of you), the unread mail count will not show it. If the block is removed months later, it will be shown again in the unread count, but by then, may have scrolled way down your message list.

As far as I know, the only time you'll see a "birdie" now is for an Alert. These are usually from SLS group owners announcing LS events and are using what used to be our old SLS email system. SLS email hasn't gone away. It's just reserved to more priviledged users.

Sometimes you'll see a red ball with a number indicating you have a new message and you click on it and there doesn't appear to be a new one. At times, it doesn't always order messages with the latest one being on top. Not sure why this happens, but I have at times had to scroll down to see it.

You may be able to click on the "New" tab on the messages page to help find it easier if this happens.
