WTF

Windermere, FL, Us

I felt like adding to that...

This sometimes leads us to stupid package sizes, like Nathan's hotdogs coming in a pack of 14 (now THAT is a wtf) , 7 oz packs of things like butter and cheese, etc.

Also sometimes one major brand makes those moves and a competitor refuses to follow. A great example is Haagen-Daz reducing their "pint" to 14 oz and Ben & Jerry not doing the same, in fact even taunting Haagen-Daz by printing "Still 16 oz" on their wonderful, delicious ice cream. This puts the retailer in a position of putting the $4.99 Haagen-Daz next to the $5.49 Ben & Jerry's and letting consumers figure it out.

Well the price/sq ft is also displayed on our shelves. It just seems unnecessary to have so many different sizes.

Yes, things at the grocery store are deliberately priced to confuse. This is just one of many reasons I firmly believe that aside from basic literacy, a good math education is the most valuable thing you can get from school. People with a strong grip on math have a huge advantage in life.

I mentioned it before that the whole shrinkflation phenomenon, where sizes are gradually reduced to hold prices steady rather than increase the price, is the direct result of consumer preference due to a mix of mathematical ignorance and emotional reactions. Time and time again, if the cost of a $5.99 16 oz package of Product needs to be raised by 5%, consumers choose a now 12 oz size priced at $4.79 over the 16 oz now costing $6.29. They just do.

Of course, this only gets you so far. Eventually they then come out with a 20 oz size at $7.99, and the cycle repeats.

I can handle double and triple size math, but I'm not sure how to math "ultra mega roll" size.

Not really WTFs, more like just amusing.

 1. My new computer headset has a Chinese (woman's) accent.

Powah on.

Bruetooth mode.

 1. My phone still thinks I'm a chemist and autocorrected "not really" to "nitrogen".

The "Zero" versions of sodas do taste closer to the sugary versions, but to me that's a negative. They are too sweet. I prefer the taste of "Diet" versions.

As for the math - I don't find soda math to be as bad, although the store does the calculation of price/oz (often incorrectly) for me.

Toilet paper has gotten into serious wtf land when it comes to sizes. There must be 15 different roll size/packaging combinations now for each brand. Paper towels too.

I'll add that pop (soda or whatever you call it in your area) math is as confusing as toilet paper math.

It's hard to figure out if the 8 pack of 16.9 oz. bottles are a better deal than a 12 pack of 12 oz. cans, and if the pack of double size rolls are a better deal than the package of triple size rolls.

IMO, Dr. Pepper Zero tastes closer to Dr. Pepper than Diet Dr. Pepper does.

We don't buy that much soda so we wait to buy it when it's on sale. Usually you have to buy 4 (or more) 12 packs to get their sale price. We did that around the 4th of July, 8 @ 12 packs of various types from the same distributor. Not all were Dr. Pepper varieties, there was some Mountain Dew, Pepsi and root beer. I think it was $4-$5/12 pack, but you had to buy in multiples of 4.

We have 6 of those 12 packs left.

I do the same thing, because usually bottles or cans can be found somewhere as a BOGO. But now the BOGO price is the same as the regular price was just a short while ago.

Good thing it's not perishable. I think i might have a chemical dependency on Diet Dr. Pepper.

We virtually never pay full retail for soda. It is such a high margin item when it's not on sale. For example, a 2L bottle of Coke/Pepsi can be over $3, but on sale it can be as low as 1/3rd that price. 12-packs that are $8 go on sale 2 for $7. I doubt they are giving them away at the sale prices.

If the prices are that ridiculous for the few times that I buy soda, I'll buy store brand soda for as little as $0.88/L or $1.29/2L bottles. Just another advantage of having a less discerning palate.

Mmmmm peppers...

I'm aware that it's cheaper at WalMart. The problem is that the nearest WalMart is 20 minutes away.

So maybe I'll buy like 10 packs at once...

But that's still much more than it was.

According to Chat-GPT, you should go to Walmart:

Hey Wayne — I poked around and found some current prices in Orlando (or close) for Diet Dr Pepper, but I couldn’t find reliable “then” (i.e. historical) data for Orlando that’s exactly comparable. Still, I can show you what I found and what it suggests.

Apparently Trump halted work on East Coast Wind-based electric gen projects. This was done by pulling already approved permits. The justification was "unspecified national security issues" and/or "need for further review".

In the meantime, some of the expensive resources to do this work are still getting paid even though they cannot proceed. In other cases, income from good paying jobs is on hold for no good reason. I guess if you can't otherwise prove that renewables aren't too expensve in terms of cost/time relative to fossil fuel plants, you just artificially manufacture a point by forcing them to take longer and be more expensive than needed. < set sarcasm = true > Brilliant!

While this could have gone in a couple different topics, regardless of where I post this it is definitely a WTF.

Here's one of a few links on this -

Price creep can include more than just "inflation." It can include hookers and blow...

:-D

But, generics over name bands or name brands over generics are one's personal preference. Right now, I am finding the generics for what I had bought name brand, taste just the same or even better. My palette has changed over the years with two different elective, but corrective surgeries... It is amazing how much better food tastes in natural state when you get a deviated septum fixed!

So even a 5 gal box of the syrup (which makes about 105 L of soda costs around $125.

Thats still about $1.20 a L, or about 45 cents per can's worth.

This is not drastically lower than the shelf price. The syrup cost itself has gone up dramatically, regardless of brand.

Windermere, FL, Us

Melvin this much more drastic than just inflation. Yes inflation has been signficant, although not that much over the last 18 months.

It's not any particular brand. Other brands and flavors are all basically the same. And when it comes to specific things like soda, yeah no the individual brands/store brands/generics are very different. They are all basically the same price as beer now.

Amazon goes from .06 per oz ($17.29 for a 24 pack of cans) to around .18 per oz for plastic bottles. It's not your store, it's Keurig, who now owns Dr Pepper. I rather suspect that it has less to do with the price of aluminum than it does with the price of the Board's hookers and blow.

Bensalem, PA, Us

Price creep... It is a thing and no one notices it, as it is subtle and over time. Look for generic brands of your favorite stuff... It tastes the same or even better in some cases.

Windermere, FL, Us

A 12 pack of cans of my precious Diet Dr. Pepper went for about $3.99 a couple of years ago. It began drifting up and settled about a year ago at $6.99.

Then it rather suddenly was $9.79, where it has been for a while. And now - suddenly again - it's $11.79.

What the hell is going on? It might seem to be related to the price of aluminium, but the price of plastic soda bottles has also gone up, and the aluminium spike has not been nearly enough to justify that kind of increase.

Either my own grocery store has gone bananas in isolation or nobody else seeks to have noticed, because my online searching for this is resulting in nothing.
