Saga of a real modern day hero. The people that give the ok for her to get her invention into medience are terrified of the fact that with their approval this woman is going to change and control the diognosis process of all of medicene in the world.
She came to me for help so its off to make a deal with the big labs, to make every breath easier. Stay tuned.

Havin get ready for the next big medical discovery. A woman all by her self doing research as a independent contractor made a major medical discovery that is before the powers to be in the process of getting the approvals to become the new standard of care in medicine . Nobel prize level. Bigger then the Polio Vaccine more along the lines of the discovery of antibiotics.

Wife and I along with other epidemiologists are all rooting for her.

Mollie Orshansky.

Her simple calculation gave rise to the welfare state we have today.

"Docter Jonas Salk", discovered the Polio vaccine in early 1950's. Think of what he did for our world. The sports crazy nuts in the GYM talk about "my team". I say to them if your player is paid that much, (10's of millions), "HOW MUCH WAS DOCTER JONAS SALK WORTH"????? Idiots don't have a clue who he was.

So I was reading back through this thread - since HOLY CRAP the "Search" function for the fora is actually working again....

I liked this topic, but not too many people had much to say. This was a rare example where some of the fora crazies had something surprisingly intelligent and reasonable to say.

HFT nominated Jonas Salk. As I said at the time - "An outstanding choice. Proof that even the worst batter hits a home run at least once in a while."

Andrew very reasonably disputed what I considered a "hero" and offered up his own definition and candidates.

The only "hero", as I defined the word, that I've ever met remains Carolyn Bertozzi. The words I wrote previously in this thread about her stand. She is the smartest person I ever met, with Peter Schultz being a close second. The only Nobel Prize winner I've ever met was Robert Grubbs, but he didn't inspire me like some others did.

I'll add Peter Dervan as a hero for giving the best presentation of science I have ever seen. He gave a 3-day lecture series in perhaps 2001. The first two were involved in his own work and related areas. The third was where he believed science was going in the next 20 years. This included everything from molecular biology to space exploration. He foresaw what we came to know as the Blackberry. I, for one, fell in love with science again after getting a little humdrum about it while slogging my way through graduate school. I wish I could view/hear that lecture again.

Inez, Firemen "put out fires" and save lives, no problem. Police get paid to "look for trouble" and save lives. Problem!

My son ,who is a New York City Firemen .he has 3 medals for pulling people out of a fires . The last one he had some bad burns on his back ,some times the Turn Out Coat doesn't protect you completely . Once it get wet and the fire hits it ,it turns to steam . I'm very proud of him ,I wish he choose a different career ,but he loves what he does ,there all do God Bless them all .

In all fairness though...

There are very few heros who still practice the art of who do.

Dr James Engstrom is a real hero. The sacrifices this man made for the truth, for science and for America is beyond what most people who do.

Parents like that would change the world.

To me the word Hero has been over used the last few years. I heard families of service members serving overseas as heroes and believe that is going too far. If I had to name a normal person as a hero it would the mother that went out and stopped her teenage son from joining the riots last summer. I can still see the video of her going after him and hitting him in the head and telling him to get his ass home as he wasn't going to join the riots. We need more parents like that, Parents that care about what their children are doing.

You're definitely applying a somewhat different, but not unreasonable, definition of "hero" than I am, and by your definition someone like Einstein wouldn't qualify. Fair enough.

He qualifies for my definition because he did something truly extraordinary for humanity and dedicated his life to doing so. The world is a different place because of him specifically.

I'm not going to dispute the application of the term "hero" to people who were heroes to specific people (such as certain soldiers, police officers, firefighters, surgeons, parents, etc). It's just that these people are, to most of humanity, fairly anonymous. They changed the world for a few specific people, but not the world itself.

Again - not disputing your definition. Just explaining mine, at least for the purposes of this thread. Your notion that some scientists in the past risks their lives for science (such as Gallileo, Copernicus, etc) is a fair point.

So then I thought about it a little more while I was outside smoking.

Albert Einstein, because he was mentioned, is a good baseline for what I'm trying to say. At the time he lived, there wasn't any risk involved, relatively, pun intended. Many scientists in the more distant past, even philosophers, and people more motivated by political and spiritual reasons, risked being burned at the stake, or shot in the head while kneeling at the edge of a ditch.

Without risk, there is no heroism. You have to be willing to give up everything to earn the title of hero.

Hilliard, OH, Us

The word "hero" itself carries a specific meaning for me. It's more of an objective thing, not subjective to an individual's opinion. A "hero" is a person who gives or risks their life for the benefit of other people, in a mostly selfless way.

Albert Einstein, though a great man who accomplished much, is not a "hero". Not in the way I use the word. Let's start with everyone who's ever been awarded The Congressional Medal Of Honor, many cops, many firemen, many less decorated soldiers. I could come up with a few more if I wanted to think about it more at the moment.
