WTF is this Win 7 stuff? When it came from the store with Win 10?

Why are you fucking around with Win 10 Pro?

And the laptop.... same questions.

Cut the nostalgia. Throw all that shit away.

Throw away the hi-fi stereo with cassette deck and carousel CD player and go to Best Buy for new laptops and wireless speakers.

I feel like Window's software would have to be downloaded directly onto my hard drive to find out.

Just temporarily. We don't want leave a permanent watermark.

I feel like there’s a joke to be had in that comment.

Well, this computer has long since been fixed and given back to the high school classmate, but, will explain what I did with it...

The computer was factory built for Windows 10 and had Windows 10 Home edition on it. Sadly, this computer was so corrupt with viruses, that it fatally crashed while in my care.

It was a learning process of how to redo things, as the hard drive format of anything Windows 10 and above is different than the format of all previous versions of Windows. After a bare metal wipe of the hard drive, a load of Windows 7 Pro, an upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, a BIOS update and an upgrade to Windows 11 Pro all in that order, I then did all driver & software updates, maintenance and tweaking to this computer.

On the day I return the classmate's desktop, he handed me his laptop that was factory built for Windows Vista. I did the same process of redoing everything, but could only go as far as Windows 10 Home, as this laptop is older and does not have the now mandated security chip that is imbedded on motherboards that Windows 11 and future versions of Windows now passes through, in order to work.

Windows can be downloaded, installed and used for free, at least temporarily. It will have a watermark/nag prompt, but can be used in a pinch. You can get it directly from Microsoft.

How old is this machine you are using? This sounds like a 1997 situation.

Like the hunter becoming the hunted?

Why not reboot to last known safe image?

Or reboot to factory settings and start from scratch?

Fun Fact: A dead car battery will freeze in cold weather.

Fun Fact2: Putting a charge to a frozen battery, including attempting to jump start a car that has a frozen battery will cause the frozen battery to explode. This will result in acid and "shrapnel" flying everywhere and void the battery warranty.

A neighbor learned both of those facts yesterday. Luckily there were no serious injuries, but I don't think the lesson was fun.

Fun fact...

A high school classmate of mine stalked me yesterday to ask if I could work on his computer. Though he is dimwitted and couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag, I would not put it past him to be the one that 'snaps.'

I have his computer at my place and have done the preliminary clean out of the crap. I easily estimate 10 gigabyte of data that was dumped on the preliminary clean out, just to get the computer stable and stop it from crashing.

Fun fact 2:

If you don't have a copy of the operating system of your subject computer, then wiping the hard drive to start fresh is not an option, unless you find the backup folder and pray that the files there are not corrupt. I have a copy of a lower grade operating system and could have gone that route. I have chosen the route of massive clean out and try to upgrade all firmware, then update all software.

When I had my Prince Albert, I was never able to put it in a can (butt) because the ring was too big!

I’ve never met anyone who’s fond of Prince Albert in the can…but it’s only Monday and the night is young ;-)

I notice Prince Albert isn't on the list.

Did he get canned?

Yeah - titles and all the trappings of nobility are surrounded by all sorts of issues. But at least for now it's still a fact of life.

And it's confusing as all get-out. ;-)

Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't very careful with that.

For the record, I don't support the concept, even though as a Canadian citizen I hold a passport issued in the name of (then Her) Majesty. I find it interesting on a historical and academic level, though.

"...there are a whole bunch of British princes and princesses that they didn't know existed. There are 22. 17 by birthright and 5 princesses by marriage..."

For no apparent reason I got caught up in the proper styling of royal titles - either because marriage of Lady Diana to Prince Charles made an impression or because I read too many Regency romances. I was under the impression that "princesses by marriage" do not place the title Princess in front of their name but place their title (taken from their husband's title) after their name. What you listed for the grandchildren of King George V appears correct but the younger generations should be:

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh

Catherine, Princess of Wales (formerly Duchess of Cambridge)

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex

Fun Fact:

Due to the recent news about Andrew formerly known as Prince, many people are surprised to learn that Andrew's daughters - and all of Elizabeth's grandchildren - are entitled to be styled as Prince or Princess, and have found out there are a whole bunch of British princes and princesses that they didn't know existed.

There are 22. 17 by birthright and 5 princesses by marriage.

Crown Prince William (Charles' son)

 • his wife Princesses Catherine

-their son Prince George

-their daughter Princess Charlotte

-their son Prince Louis

Prince Harry (Charles' son)

 • his wife, Princess Meghan

-his son Prince Archie

-his daughter Princess Lilibet

Anne, Princess Royal (Charles' sister)

Andrew's daughters (Charles' nieces)

 • Princess Beatrice
 • Princess Eugenie

Prince Edward (Charles' brother) - both if his children are eligible to be styled as Prince and Princess, but have thus far elected to not do so

 • his wife, Princess Sophie
 • James Mountbatten-Windsor, Earl of Wessex
 • Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor

Now we're going to get into some you probably have never heard of.

Four grandchildren of King George V, and their spouses

 • Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester and his wife Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester (elects not to be known as Princess)
 • Prince Michael of Kent and his wife Marie (goes by Princess Michael)
 • Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and his wife Princess Katharine - scratch that. Died in September.
 • Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy

Whew. That took longer to type out than I thought it would.

Ok i followed the trail of breadcrumbs & had to look up trumpery because you made it too tempting to resist.

“I can resist anything but temptation.” -OW

The word "trumpery" originates from the Middle English word trompery, meaning "deceit" or "trickery".

This, in turn, comes from the Old French verb tromper, meaning "to deceive". The word entered English in the mid-15th century, initially referring to fraud and deceit, but later expanded to include worthless, showy, or nonsensical items and talk.

Fun fact:

After searching high and low for months to figure out a communication issue between my cell phone and my computer and finally getting a solution this morning, I just transferred everything off my cell phone to my computer. A rough calculation of data transferred is 3 gigs. Now, I can finally do the much needed hard reset on my phone!
