Miles

Any birds that don't wander too far off course. ;-)

There are a ton of islands here, which makes it pretty easy to tell that the distances SLS lists aren't driving distances. I just checked a friend's profile and it says he's 33 miles away. If we were crows, it probably would be, but it is actually about an 80 minute/60 mile drive.

I think PhoebertAndWife have it right. I too believe it's distance as a crow flies. Maybe even other birds too, haha
Thanks!

Yes - but my home zip code = Fort Payne and I actually live 10 miles (about 20 minutes) from the point in Fort Payne used in SLS distance computations. Combined with the fact that major roads here run from southwest to northeast the point-to-point distance between me and someone to the west of me (like in Huntsville) might look like 50 miles on SLS but actually takes 75 or 80 miles (and almost an hour and a half) for me to to drive there.

For a reality check I usually use Google Maps to compute the driving distance between the town listed as someone's location and my address. It's better than nothing!

Don't they base the distance from the point you say is your home location ?

SLS seems to calculate distance point-to-point (or as the crow flies) based on zip code. Not sure if they used Post Office location or something else for exact location. It can be much shorter than drive time when there is no good route between locations.

Has anyone else noticed that the miles away and actual distance is WAY off?

I've learned to adapt the site's figure to the actual figure and move on, haha.

It's sorta funny to see a "match" is only 20 miles away and in reality it's 100 miles.

Or is it just me and I should ZIP it!! ??????
