The Gov. answers to the people, that has to be the biggest joke ever posted here....They lie, steal, distract, cover up, waste tax payers money, bed down with lobbyist..laugh at us behind our backs, on and on..
Roe vs Wade
The Government does not have the right to give or take any rights, Because the Government actually answers to the people, Sad that not enough people know or understand this. Its going to be so nice when the Government is down to about 10% of the size it is now.
Mickey
"government cannot give these to you"
Your logic is flawed. Who wrote the Bill of Rights?
God given rights are something we have all been gifted all over the world .something people have been fighting for centuries . When Thomas Jefferson said all men are created equal . They are endowed by the creator . With certain unaliable rights. Life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You might call this human rights but you see government cannot give these to you . Martin Luther King also said this.
". But the Bible is not at fault, humans are.
The Bible is just as valuable as Marcus Aurelius when it comes to creating a moral framework for life and definitely worth reading in multiple translations, along with Tacitus, who reported on the death of Jesus and had some very slighting things to say about early Christians."
Ok . . . there are some things in here.
The bible is created by humans. So yeah, humans are to blame. But, I would spin it just a tad different. Human's who wanted control over others created something that took advantage of the uneducated. The people who could read and write created something that the people who could not, aka, the suppressed, felt was the answer to everything. So was it humans? Somewhat. It was a subset of humans.
Now extend that from 2000 years ago and guess what. You still have the same fucking issue. You have educated people who think it is utter bullshit. Yes, I am saying those that do believe are uneducated. I am well aware of what that means. The book is FICTION. People who contort that fiction to being factual are the problem. And yes, it does not take the actions of those people that make them the problem. The problem is that if they can have that level of disconnect from reality, they will have it in other things in the world.
What are we seeing in the Middle East? Fighting over religion. What are we seeing here in the US? People imposing religious beliefs on others. Yeah . . . fuck that bullshit. We are no different from Saudi Arabia. If you think we are not, well, again, there goes the problem. We are using religion to impose rules. The counterargument is just the level of the rules.
Religions have done more to destroy humans progress than anything else.
"The Bible is an important book, one full of history and stories, some of which can help form a moral compass. Is it the revealed word of god?" As Catholics are the purported followers of the pope, what does the pope say that the bible is?
Really? SERIOUSLY? REALLY?
vaticannews. va/en/pope/news/2021-01/pope-francis-word-god-sunday-carry-read-bible-appeal.html
Anyone arguing for the influence of religious beliefs in government actions failed to read the 1st Amendment or to read the parts about how Deism influenced this country's founders. So, basically failing the average high school civics class.
I disagree.
Which god are you talking about? Not everyone believes in the same god. Some don't believe at all.
Religion and government don't mix.
Government solicits faith in its belief system. Religion solicits faith in its belief system. The difference is who you pray to.
Once again you do not understand …..government does not give you rights . As always been sad god given rights . You see god has always given you the right to accept or decline . Government doesn’t .
Believe what you want. Please keep your religion out of our government. That's all we're asking.
Freedom of religion means freedom from religion as well.
When you think of it none of us are perfect without sin. But rights are given to us by god not by governments
Ifwe look at taking a young life for different reasons could we go to a place where government says an old person no longer has value ….they no longer consume things so we should be able to end their life redistribute their wealth and move on. When we die is a god given right . Not governments right.
"How interesting how anyone would trust that fucking book of bullshit to show them how to treat the poor, the blacks, and women."
My father was a Catholic-raised atheist and my mother had zero religious training. Nevertheless, I was baptized and sent to Catholic school. It was a near daily event to be quizzed about what I'd learned in church and religion class, followed by a somewhat over my head disquisition refuting Christianity generally and Catholic doctrine specifically. When I say I'm Catholic, it comes from a well thought out place, one that rejects a fair amount of established doctrine - a central belief is that the Church is a flawed interpreter - and casts a critical eye on accepted translations.
So when I say you're talking nonsense, it's not a reflex.
The Bible is an important book, one full of history and stories, some of which can help form a moral compass. Is it the revealed word of god? Somewhere between a hard no and highly unlikely. It's more like a scrapbook of stuff collected over hundreds of years, with margin notes and bad translations, which was then adopted (with further mistranslations) by people (mostly men) who used it to further their own ambitions, cement their prejudices, and whip their followers into frenzies. Women and the other - Jews, Muslims, people from African nations - were often the targets of those frenzies. But the Bible is not at fault, humans are.
The Bible is just as valuable as Marcus Aurelius when it comes to creating a moral framework for life and definitely worth reading in multiple translations, along with Tacitus, who reported on the death of Jesus and had some very slighting things to say about early Christians.
At least government, in theory, has dissenting voices allowed.
It’s the Religion of Government vs the Religion of Faith. Each has their share of zealots.
Religion is the ultimate of fucking over women.
How interesting how anyone would trust that fucking book of bullshit to show them how to treat the poor, the blacks, and women.
Come on DeSantis, ban the bible, I'd move to Florida and vote for you then!
“The majority of the rabidly anti-abortion minority are religious, but are far more likely to be evangelical than Catholic. So, maybe think about that instead of targeting Catholics?”
Catholics have a very big voice on this issue. It’s one church speaking. They have a unified voice is your will. I think the Evangelicals out number them. But there are many many many Evangelical churches. They don’t speak unified.
I also believe the rank and file Catholics are probably split on this issue. As with most issues. I to am Catholic. 12 years worth of education also. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb when I say that rank and file Catholics are very
a la carte. Abortion, divorce, woman clergy, reconciliation.
"However Catholics have been behind the push to make abortion and contraception illegal for years. 6 of the Supreme Court justices are Catholic."
Evangelicals and Catholics have been behind the push, with evangelicals far more likely to be anti-choice than Catholics. I'm not sure why you're so resistant to that notion. In a Pew Research poll published in 2020, 56% of Catholics said abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while only 20% of white evangelicals did, and 68% of Catholics said Roe v. Wade should not be overturned, while only 35% of white evangelicals did.
And, while, yes, six of the sitting judges are Catholic, one of those is Justice Sotomayor. It's not the other justices' Catholicism prompting the repeal of Roe v. Wade but their conservatism. So, please attack that instead.
@Vegas , why are you so down on Catholics . Have Catholics did something bad to you ? For years the Catholics have fed clothed and warmed the hearts of the needy. Most all religions have. To call taking a baby’s life the dark ages is really out there , but we all have opinions . What the Supreme Court is discussing is turning this over to the states. …Then we will have a chance to vote . Your high percent will win ( if true ) we know so many people who have taken kids in . My neighbor has two girls and two boys . He has an older son who at West Point. They are evangelicals , not Catholics . Kids are a gift from god and there are many people waiting to give these children a home. I don’t want to argue but what you are saying is real strong left wing rhetoric. Lots of families that work in the oilfield take children in . A good friend took a 6 year old boy in . He bought the boy a puppy . Immediately the boy started stepping on the puppy , he threw the puppy against a wall in there house . He called the CPS lady and they came and got the kid and he will never have a home . You probably understand why. There are many families begging for kids ….And they aren’t all Catholics . You don’t want to hear this but Thou Shall Not Kill is the 6th commandment .And to accept killing is truly Dark Ages.
I do agree that the anti abortion folks are not all Catholics. However Catholics have been behind the push to make abortion and contraception illegal for years. 6 of the Supreme Court justices are Catholic.
As one of those non conservatives, I think that Freedom of Religion is exactly that. You are entitled to your religious beliefs. At the same time, my religious beliefs should be respected. It will be interesting how this plays out with the people in the middle, those who aren't radical on either side. Mostly people hate others shoving their beliefs down their throat. Especially when it means I may have to die or live my life in destitute poverty because of your religious beliefs.
"Catholics are now shoving their beliefs down our throat. We are all going to be impacted."
As a Catholic, I kind of feel compelled to answer this one. Justice Anthony Kennedy, a Supreme Court justice appointed by Ronald Reagan, was also a Catholic, one who wrote an important opinion upholding the right to abortion. He was morally and religiously opposed to it, but also pretty consistently voted against states applying undue burdens.
The majority of the rabidly anti-abortion minority are religious, but are far more likely to be evangelical than Catholic. So, maybe think about that instead of targeting Catholics?
I'm far from radical when it comes to politics. I just want to enjoy my life. However, a bunch of old religious men are about to impose their religious beliefs on all women. Over 60 % of the country wants abortion to remain the way it is 28% want to take away that right. What amazes me is that I thought Republicans were against Sharia law, religious law. Apparently that was bullshit. Catholics are now shoving their beliefs down our throat.
We are all going to be impacted. You might not think that you would ever get an abortion, but what happens when your life is in danger if you go forward with the birth. In many states you will be forced have the birth and likely die as a result. Your unborn fetus may or may not survive. If you decide you want live and seek out an abortion in some states you'll be arrested for murder. Either way you are dead.
What is even scarier is the laws coming quickly after the decision. Republicans want to make abortion illegal all over the country. So much for States Rights they have been screaming about for years. Birth control will soon be a thing of the past. Our courts will be tied up with tens of thousands of abortion lawsuits as Uber drivers are taken to court. Obviously there will be many unwanted and abused children. The Catholic church is the biggest sexual abusers of children in the world. I guess that is part of their agenda?
I'm sure there is no way to stop our country from going back to the dark ages. We are going to need to fund a lot of new women's prisons. There are a lot of women who can't afford to travel and can't afford the baby. A lot of people will be forced into poverty as a result of this ruling, but 28% of the people in this country support it. Why aren't the religious rights of the majority recognized? There are a lot of religions that do not agree with the Catholics.
@ggmm, thank you. @one, completely agree on it being a woman's body and decision
"I keep hearing conservatives talk about it being ok to abort up to the day of birth basically and figured it was BS."
Seven states and the District of Columbia have no restrictions on when you can have an abortion, while at the moment the rest allow for narrow exceptions (to save the life of the mother, lack of fetal viability, a lethal fetal abnormality, etc.). "No restrictions" doesn't mean you can walk up to an abortion clinic the day before you're due and have your baby killed. It does mean, as it did in the case of a friend who was seven months pregnant, that a medically induced abortion was available when the alternative was to carry her living but lacking a brain fetus to term.
The lack of time restrictions in those states that don't have them is not to enable baby murder but to remove government from a decision that is between a woman and her doctor. I can't stress enough that a reputable clinic or doctor would not perform a late term abortion on a healthy fetus except in a very narrow set of circumstances.
Admitting you don’t know a lot about the topic. Then asking the question would save on a lot of snarky answers.
No Democrat is proposing aborting babies up until birth.
As TBR stated the legality is 24 weeks. Which is a period at which it’s believed that a baby COULD BE born and survive on their own. It’s extremely rare for a baby to be born at less than 24 weeks and have a chance to survey.
Now as a fellow dummy. I’m sure I’m not saying it correctly and I’m missing something. It’s basically a Cliff note version.
To the best of my knowledge no one has proposed changing this time period. Unless for medical reasons.
To be completely honest with you. This isn’t something males should even be debating. We should have zero say on this matter. Woman should be the ones legislating and writing the laws on this.
k
