Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip.
One night they had plenty of liquid refreshment and went soundly to sleep on this bright starry night.
In the middle of the night Holmes awakened and looked up into the night sky.
He dug his elbow into Watson's ribs saying, "Watson, Watson, wake up! What do you see?"
Watson looked up and said, "Stars, stars and more stars."
Holmes asked, "What does that tell you Watson?"
Watson said, "Astronomically it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically it tells me it is a quarter past three in the morning. Meteorologically it tells me that tomorrow will probably be a beautiful day. Theologically it tells me we are just a tiny part of the great whole. Why Holmes? What does it tell you?"
Holmes sighed and said, "Watson you idiot, it tells me that someone has stolen our tent."
We can study like an intellectual all our lives, but in many cases intellectualism is hollow and vapid. We may pursue all the knowledge in the world, yet miss the simplest truth.
