Based on Vance's comments after the shooting, I think it's clear what his role is in this campaign.

When he posted, "Today is not just some isolated incident. The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination.", he solidified his position as trump's running mate and attack dog.

His post-shooting comments were an audition, his final interview if you will. With that post, he won the job and can now ratchet up the rhetoric even higher while trump pretends to want to "UNITE AMERICA".

So what do I expect from JD Vance tonight? An all-out attack on Biden, blaming him, the FBI, and the Secret Service for the assassination attempt. Too bad the proud boys leaders are in jail, he probably would have loved to be flanked by them on the stage.
