Sorillo-I found nothing wrong with your Bulleit. ;)
So, whatcha drinking
Like I was discussing with RonKathy a few days ago, I really like the spiciness in the Bulleit, and I think you're right about the rye content. I'm not hugely up on whisky, but that's kind of been my speculation for awhile now. By the way, if you're into ryes, Bulleit's rye is excellent. The Buffalo Trace is my second choice, but I find the taste to be a bit delicate. I drink bourbon with a splash of water, and while that mixes well with the Bulleit, the BT's more delicate taste doesn't do as well with the water. For me it's more a bourbon to be imbibed neat.
I actually find Makers to be just a touch harsh for my palate, which isn't a criticism, because I know it's good stuff. Personal taste is a bitch, hmmmm? I really enjoy Knob Creek, but I'm kind of a lightweight so the stronger KC is something rare for me.
Great conversation, folks. Even if some of you are wrong about my Bulleit. sticks out tongue
My go to bourbon anymore is buffalo trace. I also enjoy knob creek, and all this positive talk has me curious about eagle rare.
Scotch, I like any of The Macallan offerings for sipping neat.... Or famous grouse for scotch cocktails.
Rye, I like rally point from still 630...a local distillery. Redemption rye is also good, and Bullitt if nothing else.
Oh, and none of those glow in the dark chemical made fake cherries, please. Only real Luxardo maraschino cherries. It does make for the perfect manhatten.
RonKathy,
I enjoy Rye in cocktails such as a Manhattan (my favorite) or a old fashioned. The only way I can describe rye, is it's spicy.... like a strong rye bread.....which brings a added flavor dimension. I personally like Rittenhouse Rye, as it's decently priced and has a good flavor. It's 100 proof tho, which is strong, but means it holds up to cocktails. Bullitt makes a rye whiskey now, which is also tasty.
I'm not up on heavily wheated whiskies, but I'm guessing they aren't as sweet tasting as those with a mostly corn mash. More of a grainy flavor.... like white bread.
I like all whiskies..... depends on my mood. I like bourbon on the rocks, scotch neat, and rye whiskey in a cocktail. Just what I like. When I toured Maker's Mark, the guide summed it up best....There is no wrong way to enjoy whiskey. :-)
You're definitely seeing a difference in overall preferences between Wheaters and High-Rye imo. We lean away from Rye because anything with a higher rye content generally strieks us as "sharp" tasting (like Bulleit). We are more on the high-wheat end, which (to us) yields a more subtle flavor, smoother and often sweeter in taste. We're huge fans of Eagle Rare as well as Maker's 46, 4 Roses and Woodford (in descending order of preference).
The single exception to our overall Wheater preference is Belle Meade Bourbon, a local brand that has a 30% rye content yet drinks remarkably smooth.
Not a connoisseur but we like Makers for every day and Bookers or Knobs Creek for special occasions.

VA-you sound a lot like my brother in law! Going to Louisville next week, might need to stop by the store while there.
I am something of a connoisseur of bourbon.
Bulleit is my go-to for mixed bourbon drinks such as old fashioneds. It's OK drank neat, but wouldn't be my first choice.
Knob Creek is excellent but more than 1 shot gives me a headache every time, so I only enjoy it sparingly.
Woodfood Reserve is one of my least favorites. I dunno it just doesn't work for me.
Maker's Mark is Mrs. VA's favorite. For me it's good, but wouldn't be my first choice.
Basil Hayden to me is weak and boring.
Eagle Rare has a flavor to it that I do not like. A lot of people do, but I don't. I can't pin down what it is - just something that doesn't work for me.
I just got rid of a bottle of I.W. Harper's 15 year. I didn't like it much and got rid of it in mixed drinks such as godfathers. We bought it at the distillery a few years back.
We have a number of bottles from the Orphan Barrel collection. Most we've kept for their collector quality, although I'm sure we'll drink them eventually. Most of them are OK and overpriced if you ask me, but the Barterhouse 20 year is outstanding, and worth it's $100 price tag. If you can find it.
A few other faves not mentioned - Four Roses Single Barrel (which is much better than the plain stuff) and Bookers are very good.
But my very favorite of all is one that I've never seen mentioned here: E.H. Taylor's. The bourbon, not the rye. It's not easy to find but it's not expensive (~$50 a bottle). The single barrel is not worth the extra $30 - I cannot discern the two in this case. To me nothing beats E.H. Taylor's except some ultra brands like Pappy van Winkle, but good luck getting your hands on a bottle of that.
If you like those, try Eagle Rare. It's a cut above.
The best we've ever had was I.W. Harper 15-year. Can't find it locally, but we're damn sure going to make a trip to Kentucky to get some SOON!
I can testify that Bulleit is delicious. I also like Knob Creek, Woodford Reserve, Maker's Mark, and Basil Hayden. Heck, who am I kidding! I enjoy just about anything! :)
Gotta Get Up To Get Down. It’s a coffee milk stout beer, and about the only stout I like. (the Mrs.. Loves the dark beers but not I.). It’s tasty and high octane, so family game night was tolerable (translation: no one died).
What? No Bulleit? We DISCUSSED this, y'know....
Ice water at the moment..... Beer come 17:00

Sorillo-sorry if I came across as bragging. Your puppet isn't just any puppet...yours is infamous in the fora. I actually doubted it existed, kinda like the elusive unicorn.
Back to the topic, drinking coffee...

Okay, there's something seriously twisted about someone bragging that they've met a guy's puppet..... :)
Haha!! Yes! I love the puppet! How many people can say they've actually met the puppet?? I have!!
I'll trade ya somethin' for the rest of the bottle.... wiggles puppet
Hmmm...wishing you wouldn't have left the bottle? You know I'm willing to share. :)
Now I'm all frowny and jealous. I finished my last bottle of good stuff last weekend, and I only have my emergency backup bourbon in the drinks cabinet. pouts
Some Kentucky Bourbon a sexy friend brought me
Well, they are out there for people's enjoyment!
