@Hump , cmon to Amsterdam with us end of April ……Real Safe
RESORT SAFETY
Oh YES we have written of Memphis, NOLA, City of Atlanta, Detroit, shall we go on.. NOPE and we both carry but do NOT want to place ourselves in that situation!
Mexico: The abduction of people is a recurring security problem in Mexico. In 2021, a total of 625 cases of kidnapping were registered in the country, down from 831 cases reported a year earlier. The number of kidnappings in the Latin American country remained steady around 1,300 cases per year previous to 2020.
100,000 people are missing in Mexico never to be seen... nothing here folks keep coming down spending your money!
We were going to Cancun this month but I told my husband that we were going to cancel.We went to Memphis regularly but crime and killings and carjackings are going on every day and every night.So that’s out also
@BSfirerock
That comment is very misleading. You are trying to imply that there is rampant crime in Mexico. Based on your logic, I guess it is not safe to leave the house and walk in your area. Why? Akina Koonce sound familiar? The 22 month old that was killed by a car.
Crime happens everywhere. Yes, some places have more than others. There is no one place immune from crime.
Mexico has been that way for awhile especially on CEO's or wealthy traveling.. they just keep it quiet and usually release one after a payoff to Cartel is made.
Like to know the full story on this one.. daytime, busy streets, the family was down allegedly for a medical procedure that many go for in Mexico ?
I think today's news would keep you away from Mexico. We found Hedo pretty safe as long as you stayed in the resort.
@cop, good info thanks!
"we couldnt walk 100' on the beach (and other places on the reosrt too) without somebody trying to sell us some. I think the resort lets them all in to sell it."
anyone is allowed to walk along the beach by the waterline, so no they don't "let them in to sell pot". they actually have a weed store at hedo if you wanted to buy some
"in Jamaica it can be dangerous just getting to the resort"
it's not dangerous getting to the resort
Back in the early 1990s, my then wife and I, who traveled widely, visited San Jose Del Cabo. At that time it was a quiet, tranquil, tidy town. Frankly reminded me of small coastal California towns. Not like anywhere in Central America we had been before, including Costa Rica, a generally very safe destination in those days. We were chatting with a Restaurant owner about the town. An American couple, who obviously didn't get out much, interrupted our conversation and asked if the owner thought it was safe to walk back to their hotel two blocks away or if they should call a cab. The owner visibly resisted the urge to roll his eyes and said: "Oh yes senor. It is not Miami Beach."
As far as Desire goes I feel extremely safe and relaxed. I have no qualms about walking around Puerto Morelos which is about 15 minutes away down the beach. I understand the town is growing (mostly with rich Americans and Canadians who are pricing out the locals from what I hear). I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't change it for the worse over time. I have also never been there at night because we have had other priorities. I can honestly say I would be much more comfortable walking there at night than in Seattle. Or Portland. Or a hundred other US cities.
We just flat out don't go to Desire to experience local culture. We go to experience something which, as far as we can tell, exists nowhere else. If you leave the resort (why? It's full of naked, sexy, interesting people who might just fuck you if you play your cards right) then keep your spidy sense turned on and your hand on your wallet and passport. Like most places, Most US cities for sure, common sense about personal safety is sufficient I think. Yes, bad shit could happen to you in Quintana Roo, just like in the US. Stay home and your life will surely pass you by in relative safety. And excruciating boredom.
" Other than some people in kayaks near the shore trying to sell you pot"
Just in kayaks?? Both times we were at hedo, we couldnt walk 100' on the beach (and other places on the reosrt too) without somebody trying to sell us some. I think the resort lets them all in to sell it.
best advice Stay Home
Amazon is spot on when it comes to safety and travel. Anywhere in the world can be dangerous and there are two things you will find in every tourist heavy locale: local people who guard tourists because they provide their means for living and some locals who seek to take advantage of the tourists. Is it more fun to venture out on your own without a guide and can you do it with less expense? Yes, but you also become a target mostly for people who will overcharge you for everything and may steal something for you. Arrange your travel through an agency and you really won't have to worry much at all. Most taxi services will also handle all in country travel and act as a travel agent if you ask for what you need. Most of those guys live and breath by weekly or multi-day hires. Just research a bit and find someone who will take care of your in country travel and you should be fine. Most people who get in trouble or have problems are the ones who venture from the beaten paths too far. Also, just be smart with traveling and not wear or have anything that will draw too much attention to yourself. If you are worried just wear your old ratty yard work clothes until you get to the airport and carry your stuff in a potato sack.
@ea, "" Other than some people in kayaks near the shore trying to sell you pot"".... As if that's a bad thing lol
We have been to Hedo. We have friends that spend a week there every year and have for the last ~14 years (minus covid years.)
First off, it is a resort. Not that it is a luxury resort, but it is a resort in the aspect that you never leave the property. So while you are on the property, you are fine. Other than some people in kayaks near the shore trying to sell you pot, you are not going to see anyone else that is from the outside of the resort.
Now, is the ride safe from the airport to the resort? Yes. Why? Because the resort actually hires a person who is part of the 'bad' peeps and has that guy sit on the bus for the rides. If he is on the bus, the bus is fine. If he ain't on the bus, the bus ain't fine :)
Somehow, someway, some people believe that every outside of the US is a cesspool of crime and a sort of warzone. Then, of course, they choose some random large city in the US so that they can state it is the same. Then you get into reality. Crime is a human issue that does not know countries. Crime is not as prevalent as it is portrayed. There is a reason why it is explained in instances per 100,000.
Stay home.
We have been to a couple resorts in Mexico: Hidden Beach and Desire RM. HB discourages LS activity. Desire was very classy and you could find plenty of LS people. We are considering a visit to either Desire (either one) in Cancun or Hedo II in Jamaica. It seems the cartels in the Cancun area are picking up their violence and in Jamaica it can be dangerous just getting to the resort. Any advice?
