Just Wondering

It's Bum Fuck Egypt where I come from, but there's never been a satisfactory explanation of where that would be. My two personal choices would be in the Big Empty somewhere between central Montana and western Colorado (so, most of Wyoming) or a big chunk of Saskatchewan.

So does that make East Bum Fuck somewhere in the Sinai?

We commonly refer to East Bum Fuck but I'd never heard of Bum Fuck Egypt before - but I live under a rock. ;-)

"Where exactly is this mysterious land "Bum Fuck Egypt" located?"

I think that saying started when ppl believed Africa was the "dark continent".
And Egypt's huge deserts that stretched for hundreds of miles of nothingness.

Like the saying from here to Timbuktu. Many didn't know really where it was,
only that it was far away.

Funny though, as kids many of us thought if we dug deep enough, we'd reach China.

It's on Denial. Just downstream from the last raw sewage discharge. There's a lot of shit in Denial. You don't want to go there.

What form of government do they have?

How about "some states have been doing this for decades and none of the imaginary bullshit you are hyperventilating about has come to pass"?

New Orleans, LA, Us

So “if it’s not broken, why suppress it?” a good reason?

Albany, NY, Us

because that the way we have always done it, is not a good answer

Sacramento, CA, Us

Not saying anything of the kind. Merely adding that besides being wrong by any objective measure, this "mail in voting is a fraudapalooza" bullshit is pretty fucking insulting to five states that have been doing it, some for decades.

It is a bald faced lie to state that Democrats want no restrictions on voting.

Don't play their stupid games...

Sacramento, CA, Us

"I simply stated my opinion as to why the republicans want to ensure that only legitimate voters cast a ballot and the Democrats would rather have no restrictions or qualifications."

So Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah and Washington have had no restrictions or qualifications, some of them for decades. Gotcha.

"A few are now seeing the writing on the wall and considering jumping ship in order to avoid going down with it. Too late if you ask me."

I think the founders of the Lincoln Project , Cindy McCain, George Will, the PAC associated with GWB staffers, etc., have pretty comprehensively jumped off the ship. They are none of them office holders, but they do give the Republican party a chance at an exit lane. It won't happen, but we've had splinter parties emerge out of chaos before and that could easily happen again, leaving the existing GOP with the faith healers, QAnon, and the like.

Anacortes, WA, Us

A number of interesting points raised.

@DNLB : When my State first went to mandatory mail in voting I admit part of my reaction was "Why should I care if people can't get their ass out of bed half an hour early to vote?". I now am ashamed of that attitude. If we can accommodate people for all sorts of disability issues why should we challenge them over a basic right? Why not make it easy? I also like the idea of Switching general election day for Columbus day and making it a national holiday. Or moving Veteran's day. What better way to honor veterans' sacrifices?

And "reasonable" voter ID laws never are in my experience. Driver's licenses and hunting licenses are only two examples of "acceptable" IDs that favor white, wealthy and rural voters. The issue of widespread voter fraud is a red herring, period

@TBR/VA
Crazy Is the issue IMO. It's not about liberal verses conservative, Republican verses Democrat. When I say "Republicans need to pay a price..." I mean Republican politicians, and pay a price for associating with crazy. Everyone has to find a place in one misfit party or the other in our "bipolar" political system. I believe Trump has crossed some lines and broken some social norms that simply will not be fixed. Openly inciting violence at rallies, overt misogynistic and racist tropes, etc. Like nuclear weapons, once someone uses one 75 years of taboo will come to an end, the unthinkable will be just another tool, and the genie will not be put back in its lamp.

JW if America will recover its sanity and sense of decency and punish the bearer of these ideals. I am hopeful but not at all optimistic .

Paul Ryan (not that I like him), was the smartest of the bunch.
Did you see how quickly he "retired" and rode off into the Wisconsin sunset?

He'll look like "new" dirty money when the dust settles in a couple of years.

Ryan is just 50 yrs old, and could come back and do another 10-15 yr run in politics.

All these other guys in their late 50's, 60's and 70's are either finished with this term, or have
just one left.

Mitch and the others decided to ride the wagon til the wheels fell off.

“Democrats would rather have no restrictions or qualifications.”

Just wondering why would you want to restrict or qualify a legally registered voter from exercising their constitutional right to vote?

I guess you already answered, you and the potus have both admitted you can’t win a fair election so voter suppression is your solution.

Shouldn’t that alone be enough to question if you are in the right side here?

The most humane and reasonable way to deal with all these people, if we survive this, is some kind of truth and reconciliation commission. - Chris Hayes - Twitter - October 2020.

It's still rare for a suddenly enlightened republican to acknowledge the part they played in enabling this catastrophe. Like for decades chopping away at democracy, and only when it's crumbling do they run away.

I think we have gone a bit beyond crazy here...

Windermere, FL, Us

Well, since it was brought up...

This whole exercise over the last few years was an excellent opportunity for the Republican party to shed its crazy, much in the same way Democrats did in the 1960s. How difficult would it really have been for the GOP to distance themselves en masse from this sort of crap? But they largely didn't do it. Now they are stuck with it.

A few are now seeing the writing on the wall and considering jumping ship in order to avoid going down with it. Too late if you ask me. The SS Preservation of Integrity sailed a while ago, guys.

I’ll defer to your expertise regarding cults, I simply stated my opinion as to why the republicans want to ensure that only legitimate voters cast a ballot and the Democrats would rather have no restrictions or qualifications.

I answered the question without any insults or denigrating statements, foreign concepts to some people.

"Thats why I dont like using Republican and Democrat instead of liberal and conservative."

The Democratic political mainstream didn't fight particularly hard to hold onto the Dixiecrats in the 1960s and '70s, even though it cost them an entire region of the country when it came to national politics. In contrast, Republicans over the last few decades have embraced any number of movements and philosophies that would have horrified Barry Goldwater. While I think it's quite possible for individuals to identify as liberal or conservative, I'm not certain that's a particularly useful division, since it misses too much. That's why you have, for example, radical feminists and religious conservatives kvelling equally and with similar language about transwomen and where they pee.

“The Republicans see this as an affront and realize that if they don't prevent this they will lose every election from now on.”

So the gop knows that it can’t win without voter suppression and you and the rest of the cult are ok with that?

How sad.
