Even the static from a polyester fleece sweater can produce an arc. Whether it's enough to light the fumes or not, I have no idea.

He article I read said there was a stray spark. It easily could have been a stray ember from the matches he was striking to start the fire

I just read the starting procedure for Jay's 1909 Stanley Steamer. It's a wonder he hasn't been burned before.

I have done lots of work on cars, and have had my share of fuel spills. The articles say he was trying to unplug the fuel line, so any source of ignition should have been disabled. I am just confused where the spark came from.

The car in question is a type that uses a match to get started. In this case a fuel leak was ignited by a stray spark.

I'm a huge Leno fan...But very jealous of the wonderful life he has /had to enjoy..Everything stops for Leno when he shows up to do anything....

Well known car guy Jay Leno was pretty seriously burned working on one of his cars, and is in the hospital. Sounds like the prognosis is for a full recovery.
