Quad

Also called: Foursome (relationship)

A four-person committed relationship — typically two couples who have folded into a single relationship structure. Like triads, quads can be polyfidelitous (closed) or open. The term overlaps with "foursome", which more commonly refers to a single sexual encounter rather than a relationship.

Quads usually form one of two ways: two existing couples who become romantically and sexually entwined and decide to identify as one unit, or a triad that adds a fourth partner. The structural detail that separates a quad from a swap-friendly pair of couples is intent. Polyfidelitous quads are closed: members agree not to take outside sexual or romantic partners, mirroring the structure of a marriage extended to four people.

Internally the configurations vary. A so-called full quad has all six possible dyadic pairings active, plus the triadic and four-person dynamics that build on top of them. More commonly, some bonds are romantic while others are platonic or metamour, producing N-shaped or Z-shaped quads where two members are partners with everyone and two are partners with only some. Living arrangements span single shared households, neighbouring homes, and full geographic separation with shared travel.

The vocabulary overlaps with foursome, but lifestyle communities draw a sharp distinction. A foursome is an event, usually a single sexual encounter between two couples who go home as two couples. A quad is a relationship structure that persists across encounters, with shared logistics, often shared finances, and the kind of decision-making cadence one expects from a serious long-term partnership. The label signals intent to build something durable, not to schedule a play date.
