Foursome

Editorial scene depicting a sexual encounter, four-person subject — Foursome

Also called: Quad

A sexual encounter involving four people, most often two couples. "Quad" is also used for an established four-person polyamorous relationship.

Inside the lifestyle, foursome almost always describes the canonical two-couple full-swap scene that defines mainstream swinging. Wikipedia's article on swinging notes that swapping arrangements typically involve two couples engaging in sexual activity, with newer couples often starting at soft swap (no penetrative contact across couples) before progressing to full swap. The choreography varies: same-room with all four playing in parallel, partner swap with each new pairing in private, or freeform where the boundary between pairings dissolves entirely. Most clubs are set up to accommodate any of those patterns in the same room.

The polyamorous reading of quad is structurally different. A polyamorous quad is four people who consider themselves committed partners rather than swap partners — usually formed when two couples date each other long enough that the four-way bond becomes the primary unit. Connection patterns inside a quad vary: every member may be sexually involved with every other (a full quad), or one couple may date the other in a vee or N shape with only some of the four pairings active. The defining feature is sustained romantic commitment, not a single encounter.

The two senses share little beyond the headcount. A swinger foursome is an event; a polyamorous quad is a relationship. Confusing them is one of the more common new-couple mistakes when crossing between lifestyle and poly communities, since etiquette around emotional involvement, scheduling, and disclosure differs sharply between the two contexts.
