Lifestyle clubs descend from a long line of private adult social venues that researchers and public-health planners group under the broader heading of sex-on-premises venues, though the heterosexual-couple-oriented swinger club is structurally distinct from gay bathhouses or commercial sex venues: there is no payment for sex, the social model is membership-driven rather than transactional, and the typical floor plan layers a bar and dance floor onto a back area of themed play rooms.

Operationally, clubs split into two formats. On-premise clubs allow sexual play inside the venue itself; off-premise clubs operate as social meeting points where couples connect over drinks and music and then go elsewhere. The split largely tracks local liquor and zoning law — many US jurisdictions prohibit alcohol service at venues where on-site sex occurs, so off-premise BYOB clubs and dry on-premise clubs are both common workarounds. Door policy is the other defining variable: the standard ratio is couples and single women admitted broadly, with single men capped or restricted to designated nights, a structure clubs maintain to keep the gender balance their core couple membership expects.

Beyond regular weekend operations, most established clubs run a calendar of themed nights — masquerade, lingerie, fetish, all-white — and host visiting takeover groups that bring their own attendee base for a weekend. The themed-event layer is where a club's character shows through, and is usually how new members first sample a venue before committing to membership.
