Tariffs

New Orleans, LA, Us

@2out, I like this topic and would be interested to see how this all plays out so I hope you will contribute to the new thread I posted asking people to track 5 everyday items periodically over the next year or more to see how they are impacted.

I hope you will participate.

Well I'm not gonna try to answer everyone's little rebuttal to my opening thread. To many of them. I'm glad you all have it all figured out before anything has even happened. I myself just don't know. Hence all the fucking "?" in my original post.

As for history repeating itself. I don't know? History doesn't "always" repeat itself. Maybe something might be different. Maybe those "unforeseen" benefits that I alluded to will be the outcome? Maybe just threat of tariffs will offer up a bargaining tool that we didn't have previously?

Our current path of reliance on imported goods, makes me think of different books I've read about the American Indian. While there were many factors that contributed to their demise. One of the major factors was their growing dependence on "the white mans" goods. Guns, blankets, alcohol, steel, etc. I sure hope history doesn't repeat itself on that, because China is our "white mans goods".

But if you think all is just fine in the way things are going. Then I would suggest you order a flag with your next few purchases. Perhaps a red one with 5 gold stars to fly in your front yard.

POTUS and VP are clueless.. and GONE!!!

Trump has done more in 2 weeks than they have done in 4 years!

Taco trees dude. Wtf how don't you have a couple of those?

"You can grow veggies in 5gal Pails."

I can probably do without veggies, but I would like to know how to grow tacos and Canadian bacon in 5 gallon pails before the tariffs take effect.

I know a guy for maple syrup...

@8, I don't think everyone can and your apartment comment was spot on. But I still think most people can figure something out or they are gonna have to.

And yes. I'm incredibly selfish. I've admitted that plenty of times. I only care about myself and less than a handful of humans. Nobody is coming to save me/you, I'll be damned if I'm waiting on this govt (incoming included) to help or save me. Fuck all of them.

Unless Trump enters Canada illegally, Trudeau will have to come to the US to discuss the border and proposed tariffs...

Canada doesn't allow known felons to enter.

Although, Trump has made a statement right out out of his hero Putin's playbook and could annex Canada making it the 51st state.

"While their seeds are sprouting to be eaten by rabbits, deer, squirrels and everything else, what do they eat?"

Welcome to Thunderdome.

As far as Mexico and Canada coming to the table, I rolled my eyes a little. Trudeau is cagier, but Sheinbaum, Mexico's president, was pretty quick to refute Trump's claims of same and had this to say:

“In our conversation with President Trump, I explained to him the comprehensive strategy that Mexico has followed to address the migration phenomenon, respecting human rights. Thanks to this, migrants and caravans are assisted before they arrive at the border. We reiterate that Mexico’s position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples.”

From CNN: "Sheinbaum had previously said that Mexico has worked with the Biden administration to address the flow of migrants through the country, leading to a 75% reduction in US border crossings over the past year. And after the call with Trump on Wednesday, she did not outline any new policies she planned to put in place in order to avoid tariffs, focusing instead on how her country had already acted to address the crisis."

She also said the drug problem was the result of American drug use. Drugs don't kill people, people kill people, right?

"You can grow veggies in 5gal Pails. Grow enough during the spring, summer and fall, can them and have it then rest of the year."

Ever been inside 1-bed apartments in Manhattan? What about the 2-bedroom joints in Harlem or Brooklyn? Not a lot of sq footage and very small backyards. Oh yeah, Spring comes late in the Midwest, and the Fall comes too soon. You can relate, to the Fall, right?

While their seeds are sprouting to be eaten by rabbits, deer, squirrels and everything else, what do they eat?

I realize Scamp's question was posed to the OP but ...

The existing US tariff on Canadian lumber was almost doubled in 2024 to the current amount of almost 15%. I wonder if that means there would be another effective increase in the tariff on Canadian lumber if/when Trump's promised tariffs go into effect? A 40% tariff on the type of lumber used in construction would certainly be felt.

nahb. o rg/blog/2024/08/canadian-lumber-tariffs

I'm pretty sure that virtually all roofing materials are petroleum based. Clay tile and metal roofing would be exceptions. A tariff on imported Canadian oil would probably result in a rise in the price of petroleum based products including asphalt shingles, hot asphalt roofing, underlayment, insulation, rubber roofing materials, sealants, adhesives etc., etc.

I believe you have said you work as a roofer in Ohio, correct? You are probably familiar with lumber prices so do us a favor and post the prices of some basic materials that you purchase regularly for your work.

Ohio happens to import a lot of lumber from Canada so if there is a 25% tariff imposed, I would like you to update those prices afterwards.

You always want everyone to look at the economy on a personal level so here is your opportunity to share with us how the new administration affects you personally.

The top American import from Canada is oil. Number 2 is automotive parts/products.

The top American import from Mexico is automotive parts/products.

China is a huge consumer of American agricultural products. Soy beans, corn, wheat, pork, beef. Historically China has found other sources of products they imported from the US to counter US tariffs on Chinese products.

You can grow veggies in 5gal Pails. Grow enough during the spring, summer and fall, can them and have it then rest of the year. I know it's not easy but it's worth it imo.

Farmers market is a great place to find people who grow their own and learn from. Find growers who use minimal chemicals and stock up. Growing your own is cheap as fuck. Buy meat from local farms too.

Or the weather to grow fresh vegetables year round.

San Luis Obispo, CA, Us

Flip, not everyone has the luxury of a vegetable garden... or even a yard to put it in.

Windermere, FL, Us

I find it hilarious how the message was that prices won't go up.

As reality is setting in, that message is being replaced with "we didn't need that stuff anyway"

Summerville, SC, Us

Probably shouldn't be eating that shit anyway imo. Might push people to start growing their own food which is a good thing.

San Luis Obispo, CA, Us

Everything will be more expensive.

I can't wait for the Trump "I did that" stickers popping up at the grocery store.

Irondequoit, NY, Us

Wouldn’t be bad if it were just the crap. That’s the stuff we can do without. It would be nothing more than an inconvenience.

The canned tomatoes that people in Ohio are very fond of are gonna be more expensive with imported tin from Canada.
