The pipeline was hacked, this did not cause the shut down....the moron IT people did an improper shut down..because management lost track of how much money to charge distributors...WTF...now how the hell will a system reboot take days!...Maybe time to nationalize the oil industry once again...its our resource

THE PRESIDENT AND THE TWO HOGS....
Last Tuesday President Biden got off the helicopter in front of the White House carrying a baby piglet under each arm.
The squared-away Marine guard snapped to attention and saluted, "Nice Pigs..., Sir".
The President replied, "These are not Pigs. These are Authentic Arkansas Razorback Hogs. I got one for Vice-President Kamala Harris and I got one for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
The squared-away Marine guard again snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "Excellent trade, Sir."

@PHX

Your #1 point is way the fuck off, seriously, way the fuck off.

By no means does the government regulate the network that the oil industry uses.

Want to see government regulation like that? Look at the FAA and the air traffic controllers. Amazing how that is NOT hacked.

Here we have a company that is VITAL to the infrastructure and commerce of a vast majority of the east coast. Should they be free to do as they please or should they be regulated?

Ransomware? Congress should declare Ransomware an act of war. Trace it back to where it originated in any Country. Covertly kill them all like the Israelis would do. Or kidnap them and put them in a nice place.

The question is should the government regulate the intenet....In private industry NO...the stakeholders of the oil company shoukd sue the pants off them for such arrogant incompetence

INCH---->Or is that.... Some Shirts don't and some Skins do?

It's actually BOTH shirts and skins do. The ONLY difference? Which party is the majority and which is the minority.

EROTIC---->Now the fun points: 1. Is this infrastructure that should be regulated? 2. How many are going to blame Biden for gas prices increasing on the east coast now? :) 3. Should the feds invest in systems that would protect vital infrastructure from these types of events?

1) It currently is but once again the growing bureaucracy has failed and will never be held accountable.

2) The only way Biden could be blamed is by applying the Trump era Accountability Matrix. After all, this did occur under the Biden watch. Let me guess? Biden is only responsible for the good things LMAO. Lemmings........

3) They are, refer to response #1

Just because I can :)

So some haxxors have ransomwared the colonial pipeline.

Let me explain what that does for the non-nerds.

Computer networks consist of public and private networks that interconnect. A public network consists of an IP address that is not in the 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x or 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255 range. Private networks sit in those addresses. How your private network gets to the internet is a device (router) takes a PUBLIC IP address in and then the traffic on that is directed internally.

Now what ransomware is someone got a file from some place. It could be they downloaded it to it came in an email. They decided to RUN this program. (Key part there.) Then the program does a FUCKTON of things. It one, discovers all the devices on YOUR network and then all the machines that your machine can get to. Once it has that information it starts its process. It takes every file on your local computer and runs it through an encryption tool. Once it is done with YOUR computer, it goes through what it learned and then hits all the files that YOUR computer can see at that time. Once it is done, it changes the boot loader on the host computer. It comes up with a message that says what it has done. It will then ask for some amount of bitcoin to be sent to an email address. They generally end in .ru After they receive it, they will then send you a long code. You put that long code in on that screen and the software will then work on decrypting the files on the LOCAL computer and then all the ones it saw in the past.

This is annoying as fuck if you have a network that has a server that 5 or 50 or 500 store their files on for the company. This is why this shit is really terrible if it hits an admin-level person. Admins generally have rights to see EVERYTHING, so that means EVERY file is encrypted.

Colonial Pipeline, got hit. This is a pipeline from Texas up to Maine. IIRC, they are responsible for about 45% of all the fuel for the east coast.

Now the fun points:

  1. Is this infrastructure that should be regulated?
  1. How many are going to blame Biden for gas prices increasing on the east coast now? :)
  1. Should the feds invest in systems that would protect vital infrastructure from these types of events?
