The clinical and academic definitions of bisexuality have broadened over the last three decades from a strict attracted to both men and women framing to attraction to people of more than one gender, a shift driven in part by activist Robyn Ochs's widely cited definition and by greater visibility of non-binary identities. The American Psychological Association treats sexual orientation as a continuum rather than a binary, and many bisexual people locate themselves anywhere from a 1 to a 5 on the Kinsey scale.

Lifestyle profile usage diverges meaningfully from the broader cultural definition. On most swinger platforms a woman tagged bi is signalling that she is open to same-sex contact during a swap, which in practice often means kissing, oral, and touch with the other woman in a four-person scene. Bicurious indicates interest without prior experience. For men, bi typically signals readiness for an MMF configuration in which the men engage with each other as well as with the woman, and historically a smaller share of lifestyle men have advertised this than women — though survey work by sex researcher Justin Lehmiller suggests that fantasy figures for male-male contact are higher than community-stated interest.

Community etiquette treats bisexual and bi-curious tags as openness rather than expectation; the negotiation still happens in the moment, and a partner advertising as bi retains the right to decline any specific contact during a scene without explanation.
