Messaging

Differing experiences are part of the SLS mystique! ;-)

IIRC, there was a purge of old e-Mail messages, possibly right around the time that the Mail feature was permanently disabled.

Like others, we lost a lot of communication we had over the years with couples - our fault for assuming that the messages would be stored for as long as we used SLS. We should have moved them to another program. Of course, there was no warning to members that there wound be a purge so that those that wanted to save communication could move them.

Wonder why our experience is so different. I read your post then went to the oldest message we have in our messages. It's from March 2020 and includes the whole conversation. Nothing appears to be obviously missing or out of place.

"...There is a similar construct in the messages system but it only applies to messages you didn't delete. Once deleted they're gone forever "

Yeah - not exactly.

I never delete messages - occasionally I want to look back at what someone said to me (memory isn't what it used to be).

Older messages (maybe a year old and older) are gone.

The oldest of the remaining messages are often incomplete and in reverse order. Long messages only display the first few lines.

I've learned to transfer critical information to Notes on a profile and exchange alternate contact information as soon as possible (and I record that in a gmail account so I can contact others when SLS isn't available).

That feature is still there....kind of. It only applies to messages sent on the old email system.

On another note., their used to be a function that previous messages to someone where noted using the envelopes at the top of the profile. So if i opened a profile that seemed familiar I could see immediately if I I had communicated with these people before. Sometimes it was a years old dead end. Handy feature that was.

The envelopes are still there the feature seems to have been "upgraded" into nothingness..

That's possible. Looks like their checking status by using a simple ping rather than an actual http request based on the language used on the site.

This isn't the most reliable way to check uptime. Pings are low priority traffic and can even be intentionally ignored by the website.

In any case, we agree that the site is far too unreliable. We get the 404 message daily ourselves. Rarely for a long period of time but still. And the messaging system has been intermittently available as well.

We are sad to say that we think the upgrade message on the site is merely an attempt to excuse an unreliable infrastructure while they attempt to determine the croot cause.

We'd expect an upgrade to come with new features and some fanfare to get the users excited.

Aamdj, possibly the reason. Is the site is taking too longer to load and then viewed as down. Maybe

What I find particularly inexplicable is that these corrections, updates, improvements, whatever, are actually being done to the production website. Best practices scream that any changes that may affect the uptime and accuracy of a website must be done in a Staging Site, where customers aren't affected by the process. One does not (or, certainly shouldn't) publish the changes until they are proven to be correctly functioning.

Could the owners of this site consider that option? I think it would be a win-win for all.

Interesting. That site is reporting that sls is down right now. Obviously, that's not the case.

We used isitdownrightnow
We along with that site showed 404 error early this morning and again for a short period this afternoon.

KandK,

What site are you using to check uptime? We've been on and off the site all day. No issues with the site or messaging here using the website (not the app) until a few moment ago when we got the 404 message for about 10 minutes.

Wayne, how did it work for you all morning long when I have a screenshot of a site monitor that shows SLS was down for three hours early this morning?
If you’re using the app, that’s one thing.. But the site is another issue.
Please advise.

Wayne how could it be a problem on the end of so many people. Really it is the web site.

Wayne are you using app or website? Details would help.

Messages are working for me. They have worked all morning when I test them. So not sure if it is an intermittent site issue or an issue on your end.

Stonington, CT

Messaging still not working. Glad it is a site thing and not me.

It shows that we have messages but it comes up blank when we click on them.

What is going on with the messaging?
Frustrating.

everything is going down, site has become useless, and I dont think sls even cares, like the class action suit idea

Messaging, hot dates, gallery permissions. There are more things not working than working. We’d have a better chance to connect with people if we got on our roof and sent smoke signals.

This is edition number four in a off and on again eleven year history. Joined again in April and nothing but problems while the service is exactly the same minus email capability and higher prices. I was given an “extra” month because I literally couldn’t upload photos or get them approved until early May . Now I can’t send messages. Obviously the site has been hacked and they are trying to fix things on the fly without much success. All said, this last try is probably my last which is too bad because the audience is relatively normal and tends in my age direction.

mguns - If something is done in the forums or your profile or on a Hot Date, it becomes much more visible and easier to police. A direct message usually is fine. I get that you can't know someone in advamce that you haven't yet met that may be looking and want to post contact info for that, but the outside contact thing has been in the T & Cs for as long a I can remember.

Not saying I agree with it. Juat that this is nothing new and where all Profile changes and Hot Dates are getting reviewed, it's just more likely to get flagged now than in the past.

I have tried to message the same person three times; each time I hit send and the message disappears, that’s jf I can open their message in the first place to reply to.

The constant failure of the site and messaging system should be an embarrassment to the people who run it.
