Message notifications

There used to be an option for email notifications of messages. It was removed with the old email system when the implemented the new IM system.

Is there a reason there is no option to have an email notification of a message?
I realize some people may not want it for privacy, but others would love to know they are being contacted.. After all, isnt what we are here for?
Why not give a choice?
