Starting a group

I know this is old, but rather than start another similar topic...

I have a group on another site. I limit the group to people within a geographic area as the group is meant for people that are looking to play to be able to engage with others in the group that are within a reasonable distance. The group has about 150 people in it.

Recently I tried to see if there was interest in a Meet & Greet for group members. I'm beginning to think that most join groups for the same reason that people accept tons of FB friend requests, which seems to just be a contest on who can get the highest number.

Anyway, this is likely why a lot of groups just die on the vine. Just like people sign up for these sites and never meet anyone, it appears a lot of these same people sign up for groups with no intention of meeting people.

It's unforntunate, because we're still having an absolute blast in the LS and would love to bring people in that could enjoy the same. We have the ability to greatly expand someone's circle of LS friends, but this is like that horse you can lead to water that still won't drink.

Would starting a group for newbies be a good idea?
I'm thinking meet and greets for people who are not comfortable around people at meet and greets because they feel intimidated or awkward because they do not have experience ? Or they have been turned down due to a lack of experience. Maybe they can meet other people just like them and get experience?
