The Trump tax cuts were temporary for individuals, permanent for business. So scream as much as you want, NO president has to do anything to the tax code, your personal taxes are going back up.

For anyone reading that who hasn't heard of it, LeChatelier's principle has origins in chemistry as:

When any system at equilibrium for a long period of time is subjected to a change in concentration, temperature, volume, or pressure, (1) the system changes to a new equilibrium, and (2) this change partly counteracts the applied change.

This can be more broadly applied to systems as:

When a settled system is disturbed, it will adjust to diminish the change that has been made to it.

And even more roughly:

Any change in status quo prompts an opposing reaction in the responding system.

The first applies to chemistry and biology. The second to economics. The third to human behavior.

We once had a young communist (or something) come onto these boards. Some speculated he was on the autistic spectrum somewhere, and they may have been correct.

tbr and I were discussing the FairTax and Robert kept barging in with his rambling. So we elected to swap out the word "stress" instead of "tax" in order to confuse him (the word "stress" being borrowed from LeChatalier's principle). FunAhoy referred to what we were doing as using "idiot repellant" and was skeptical that it would work.

It worked. Robert kept barging in but had no idea what we were talking about. He kept talking about stress on the poor etc.

Funny as hell.

Many people with likely much better understanding than ours have argued extensively about the predicted effects of such a system. I've argued about it here before but don't want to again.

I only brought it up because this was the style of taxation that Florida uses. I thought I would save myself some typing by using the shorthand, but I think I've typed much more now.

Thanks VA for the clarification. I was not aware that you were referring to the flat tax, pseudo vat tax that was proposed back in the 90s.

I think TBR nailed it. Tax code is behavior control. That 'fair tax' proposal as I remember it would have a bad effect on the economy as it rewards not spending over spending. IIRC, there was no cap gains and it was all on the spend. So if I made $1mm and spent $50k, then my tax would be on the 50k. If I earned 50k and spent 50k, the tax would be on the 50k :)
