The objective of catch and release was simply to avoid overcrowding and unsanitary conditions in the holding camps that we are now seeing.

There were just as many people arriving under Obama, and the detention centers overflowed... so Obama administration released people into the USA for what amounted to a 2-year temporary work visa. Trump is refusing to release people into the USA while waiting 2 years for an asylum hearing before being deported.

The reality is that Trump changed very little as far as deportations and separating families, that's all media hype, what has changed is the numbers flooding the borders claiming asylum and using children as a means to gain entry because of the flaws in our system. The market for selling children south of the border is horrific, read the numbers of young girls who are raped by their handlers & sellers, and nearly all of the boys are.

All of the media quotes state that the focus of the raids is on new arrivals. People who have recently come and have been denied asylum or simply never went to the hearings and had deportation orders issued. I blame this on the massive campaigns in Central America and other countries telling people how to beat the system and get asylum and benefits for life. Regardless of anyone's sense of morality, the US cannot absorb all of the poor people in the world, and trying to is insane.

From mid-1970s (that is half a decade pre-Reagan) up through and including Obama (so 6 presidents not named Ronald Reagan), there was not a significant effort to identify, process and deport illegal immigrants other than new arrivals. If you had been in the country less than 1 or 2 years, you were a target. If you had been here 2 years or more, you were not targeted.

Trump changed that and is going after other than just new arrivals. He has doubled the number of people that have been here more than 2 years that are being arrested and processed for deportation. He has more than tripled the number of people being arrested and processed for deportation that have been here more than 2 years and never arrested for a crime.

The ability of Trump to go after long-term illegal residents so much harder than prior presidents shows how little those prior presidents were targeted those long-term illegal residents.

You are correct. The data I was initially looking at was "deportations", which is when people fought deportation as long as possible. This excludes voluntary removals. Changes in the late 90s removed most of the advantages to voluntary return, which is why there were so few "deportations" before and a ramp up after.

Turns out Obama's title of "deporter in chief" only applied because that is the time when illegal immigrants got really serious about not accepting voluntary return. My bad!

Actual peak in deportation + removals was '98-2000 (Clinton's second term). They dropped a bit with recession caused by Tech-wreck, but then Bush Jr hiked them again as the housing bubble took hold.

However, any way you slice it, every president since "at least Clinton" until Trump has focused on catching and removing recent arrivals and not those that have been here a significant amount of time. Trump has more than doubled the number of people in the country for more than 2 years that are being arrested and processed for deportation and more than tripled the number of people without criminal convictions that have been in the country more than 2 years. (but even then it is more symbolic than significant as even at 400K a year total, with 200K of those long-term, it would take 50-70 years to deport all the current illegals (of course, most would die of old age first)).
