Playswell:
Carnival is a season which last sometimes over two months long. It technically starts on 06 January every year. You can do everything from a black tie/ball gown party to slumming it in the streets...and everything in between. Events take place all over southern Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. But New Orleans is the unofficial center of activity.
The French Quarter is fun on almost any day. During Carnival, we like going during the day into early evening. After that, the area becomes a beer-spilled, raucous frat party, with fun people, yes, but also a fair number of fights and other problems. We avoid the Quarter at night generally now. Parades take place all over the region. The big days are the last week before Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday. Lundi Gras is usually pretty rockin' all day long. If you've never seen a real Carnival parade, you need to.
Many bars in the Quarter and elsewhere are pretty tolerant of nudity and even some light playing. We've seen it many times in Bourbon Street bars. On SLS you can locate groups and meetups in the city to celebrate. Collette's is open a lot as well. Strip clubs abound but the street is far more interesting.
We love Frenchmen's Street at night, the Garden District and Magazine Street during the day. And make reservations now for great restaurants late into the evening. Way uptown on Magazine, many small and large restaurants offer the best food in the US.
We love this city and the people. South Louisiana still is its own culture, separate from US mainstream boring consumerism.
