Ok, it is interesting and funny to read the responses. In theory, it sounds good, sounds realistic. In reality, the other couple is not wrong.
My wife and I spent memorial day weekend where this person lives. The other couple is NOT wrong. Sure, it is not 100%, but it is highly prevalent.
The area that the OP lives in is 145k 55+ people in Central - North Central Florida. There are about 80 communities there and most would know those communities as 'gated' communities. They are not, well, all but one is. What the villages did was work with the counties to have the infrastructure built, aka public roads, then built around it. Then they put in gates! Yes, it looks like you are going through a security gate to get onto public roads. But the reality is that if you do not have a card, you just push a red button and the gate opens.
Now in that area, the main mode of transportation is not a car, it is not a bike, it is not by feet. It is a golf cart. As there are HOA's, when we were driving around in the 'communities' we did not see any political signs. I think the HOA bans that. But . . . they can't ban signage on golf carts! We wound going to one of the three public squares that they have. They have live bands that play every day from 5 to 7. There are a bunch of people in square . . . dancing. We sat in a restaurant (World of Beers) and watched the dancing and all the golf carts moving around. Sure, we saw a few that had people's first name on the cart, sure we saw some that had college logos on them, and yes, we did see a bunch that were MAGA advertisements.
Now are the 145k people all Maga, naw. We met a few that were not. But to stereotype . . . not that far off to the couple that said no.
The villages is interesting, it is basically 12 miles north to south, 6 miles east to west. What they sell is social activities. All times are measured in golf cart time, not car time! Within 5 minutes from where you live there will be a small rec center. This is generally a pool with a meeting room or two. IIRC there are about 140 of these! Within 10 minutes will be a medium size center, which is a pool, bigger rec room, pickleball/tennis, etc. Within 15 minutes of where you live there will be a a large rec center. This will generally be attached to a 18/27 hole course, restaurants, pool(s), gym, etc. And within 20 minutes of where you live there will be commercial areas where grocery stores, etc. are. Why I typed all of that out is because they are within the villages, but are commercial and thus there are billboards. Guess what kinda billboards you see there? :) So that can give a serious impression. The other funny/interesting thing, the area we stayed in. HOLY . . . on one road, there were, IIRC SIX churches in a row! Definitely an area to get your religion on.
