Happy International Non-Binary Day

A cishet white person asking why anyone feels the need to celebrate their identity seems pretty on the nose.

Why in the hell do people feel the need to be celebrated? No one celebrates your life better than you can but if you need to advertise that you need celebration, Write to Hallmark and get them to make you your own card.

I could find no link between Senator Huddleston or Congressman de la Garza and Berkshire Hathaway.

In the United States, National Ice Cream Month is celebrated each year in July, and National Ice Cream Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in July. The celebrations were originated by Joint resolution 298 in the United States Senate, which was sponsored by Senator Walter Dee Huddleston of Kentucky on May 17, 1984, and Joint resolution 543 in the United States House of Representatives, which was sponsored by Representative Kika de la Garza of Texas on April 11, 1984. The resolution proclaimed the month of July 1984 as "National Ice Cream Month" and July 15, 1984 as "National Ice Cream Day". It was signed into public law by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1984, with Presidential Proclamation 5219.

"I think yesterday was National Ice Cream Day."

Declared as such by Berkshire Hathaway.

I know, right? Some group got a day for themselves and their friends and families to lift them up and celebrate them. And now that’s a reason for someone not at all involved to get bent out of shape. I don’t get it.

This morning on the early news, they announced what national day it is today. It resonated so well with me that I already forgot what it is.

To quote Pirates of the Caribbean, when it comes to binary sex in nature, “The code is more what you’d call ‘guidelines’ than actual rules.”

And gender expression is even messier than biological sex. Look up the story of Mmamoriri the lion. Mmamoriri was born female, but later developed a full mane, a lower roar and behaves as a male lion would, even trying to mate with lionesses in their pride. Five other lions in the area have been found with similar characteristics. Whenever someone says “there are only two genders” I know they never studied biology past 9th grade. Maybe a 100-level survey?

" That's crazy if true and I trust you. Surprised to hear that"

Lots of people are, but this belief we have that there are only men or women is just a belief. It's not actually true. A common form of intersexuality is someone genetically male but with female genitalia (all fetuses initially develop as female), which is invisible without genetic testing, at least until puberty. It's often a surprise to the individuals.

Honestly, I think if of been born thirty years later, I'd probably identify as non-binary. At 52, I'm comfortable just calling myself "gender nonconforming." I've got long hair, I'm a stay-at-home parent, and I've never really felt an affinity for most male-coded activities.

There's a lot of overlap between bisexual people and people who are transgender, non-binary, agender or gender NC. Maybe that's because being bisexual breaks gender stereotypes. It's transgressive.

Scandle, as an old guy myself, I have trouble keeping up with the neologisms. But as someone once told me, "if the singular they/them was good enough for Shakespeare, it's good enough for me."

It's not like these are bank holidays. Nobody's getting the day off. Post offices aren't closed. If someone doesn't like it, they can just ignore it and let the people it's made for enjoy a little recognition.

ionsawmill, thanks for posting this. I have a kid who, though definitely biologically female from birth and with female interests most of their life, has in recent years felt they are non-binary. Their husband is cool with that, loving and supporting our kid no matter what. We absolutely love and support our kid, too, regardless of how they identify. The hardest part for us as parents is to get used to using the plural "them" or "they" instead of "her" or "she", but that's a small issue.

@molly, "" Just to maybe keep this from being any more political than it tried to trend, approximately 2% of the US population is intersex. To put that in perspective, that is a greater percentage of the US population that identifies as Jewish (1.7%)."".... That's crazy if true and I trust you. Surprised to hear that

"So who declares all of the National (fill in the blank here) days? We have one for ice cream, coffee, and just about everything else."

Those were my thoughts when I first saw the thread title.

If your response to someone just wishing a group of marginalized people a happy day is to a) deny they exist or b) ask when someone is going to celebrate you or a majority you don’t even belong to, maybe examine what it is about yourself that made such a response seem rational.

All I did is wish all the non-binary people on the site a happy day. Calm down, people.

What a weird thing for a bi couple on a swinging site to ask.

just curious, when is happy heterosexual monogamous day?

True intersex people are a biological phenomenon and it’s sad that many times parents and doctors have chosen surgery to change how they were born before they could choose themselves. Having said that, parents and doctors are doing the same thing now to children to attempt to change their gender when they are too young to truly understand.

Just to maybe keep this from being any more political than it tried to trend, approximately 2% of the US population is intersex. To put that in perspective, that is a greater percentage of the US population that identifies as Jewish (1.7%).

Everyone is binary no matter how they choose to identify.

International Non-Binary People's Day is observed each year on 14 July and is aimed at raising awareness and organising around the issues faced by non-binary people around the world. The day was first celebrated in 2012. The date was chosen for being precisely midway between International Men's Day and International Women's Day.
