VA Beach - I agree with you, in the morning or it isn't getting done. A few months ago I had a driver roll down his window to let me know his opinion about me running at 4:30 AM in near freezing temps.

"If it doesn't get done in the morning, there is a high probability of missing a workout."
100% true for me. I must do my workout before I do anything else other than morning bathroom stuff. Before checking emails or anything. I need to do it with a clean conscience and not feel like there's something I should be doing. I can probably count on one hand the number of times I exercise past 8 am each year.
I would say that if you've established exercise as a routine but don't usually look forward to it, maybe it's not the right exercise for you.
I took up running for a while around 10 years back, and got to the point where I could run a 5k in... 23 minutes? But i still hated it. I was promised I'd come to love it, but that love never came.
Cycling, on the other hand, I love. Once I'm in my established routine I am almost giddy when I get to bed on time, looking forward to my early morning ride.
Running early in the morning sets the tone for the rest of the day for me. If I wait till evening , I won’t do it. We workout everyday at 3:30pm right when we get home for a hour and make it a priority. This clears our mind and stress from the day of work
I did this morning too!! even though it was so cold lol. I always feel so much better throughout the day knowing that I did my run that morning! When I dont run, I feel like a bum, lol
@jessy and @fokkers , i just know that if i dont do it right then, it wont get done lol
Homie ain't running unless it's something trying to kill me but same goes for working out.
We understand Jessy. If it doesn't get done in the morning, there is a high probability of missing a workout. Life seems to take over once the workout is complete.
How is everyone's weekend going? We managed to squeeze in a run before the weather turned sour. Depending on what happens tonight, it may be a gym day tomorrow.
Have a fantastic weekend!
Heard and understood.
fokkers, honestly id be lying if i said i wake up excited to run lol. i just know that if i dont do it right then, it wont get done lol
Jessy, after decades of being a morning runner, now a days I have a hard time getting up early. It seems that 5PM after work run just works for me. Kudos to you and all the other morning runners.
Nat, as a former competitive cyclist, that is my biggest fear and honestly what has been keeping me from hitting the road again. I live in a congested area with drivers who are just bad and inattentive. I may try this spring to go out one or two times a week, to add some cross training, but the fear is real.
I quit running for cycling years ago. 25 to 30 miles 5 times a week for 10 years. And then I got hit by a car. Ouch! 8 days in intensive care. I now ride less on the road and more indoors, lol. I won the law suit, btw.
i LOVE working out early in the morning and then i usually go for a run later. usually its wake up, work out, light breakfast, then a run. the run is like the end for me. i cannot work out AFTER a run. ive tried, lmao
Welcome MorningRunners!
I envy that you can run in the morning. I just can’t get out of bed to get the miles in early. I prefer late afternoon/early evening.
Hello everyone. Our screen name says a lot about us. We are morning runners and we like to converse and meet up with others who share the same interest. Our favorite runs are done on trails but, we understand the value of a good track workout. Last weekend we did ran seven miles of snow and ice covered trails. We don't only run trails, last fall we both completed the Marine Corps Marathon.
Joe_For_Fun Seen your post., (can't contact directly your page blocks me) I'm thinking of HI race in 2025. Any information to make commit and get me get on a plane is welcomed. Thanks. Also I like to do races in PA ( and will travel for them also) so any local race information welcomed too. Keep moving forward :-)
27 days out till Honolulu Marathon! Easy 5 miles today, 45 minute Tempo run Wednesday, 5 easy Friday, and 17 easy Saturday! Gonna build up next 3 weeks before we get to the glorious taper week! Anyone run over in Oahu? Need some running partners for those slow long runs!
(Him) About to run around the neighborhood and also hit the Neuse River Trail sometimes since it's nearby. Gotta work that heart and feel alive with the endorphins pumping.
I know the start/finish is about a mile away and I decide that I will re-evaluate it then and i was sure I would bail then. WelI got there and kept going. Trying to not concentrate on the pain. I figured in a mile I would be by the casino I was staying at and maybe bail then. I didn’t. I am now going slow and starting to walk/run. I kept going and so began the death march. By the last 3.5 - 4 miles I could only walk. I did manage to run the last .25 mile to the finish. Everything was sore as fuck. I finished in a new personal worst 5:30 and change. DNFing was not an option. I was humbled. Those who finish in 5 plus hours are a strong breed. The mental fortitude that is needed is heroic at best. The heat was bad, but I was drinking at every stop. I didn’t hit the wall but the Boardwalk hit me. During those last 3 miles where I was walking at 16 minute pace, all I wanted to do was finish, shower and to go visit my grandkids (they live nearby.) mentally I was broken. But in the passing hours I started to realize what I had just done. No one would have faulted me for dropping out, but I would not have been able to accept it. I am much stronger than I ever thought I was. Right now 2 days out, my knee is fine, my hip is a little sore but nothing bad. My quads are a little more sore than they usually feel after 2 days. My ribs though are another story. Breathing still hurts.trying to sleep is a puzzle of what position I can be in so it’s not so bad. Even going over a speed bump hurts. Not the first time I have bruised that area so I know I am looking at 7-10 days of soreness. I am shutting my season down (there were a few races I wanted to between now and December. I also decided that I am taking a break from marathons for next season and will instead concentrate on halfs and reevaluate running another full in 2026.
I went in fully confident, and I still am. I managed to deal with most of the punches.
It’s a disgrace that the state of NJ and the CDRA would allow the state of that boardwalk - which is a state crown jewel— to get in that condition, especially in sections they had recently refurbished with trex material. The boardwalk in the next town, Ventnor, was fine. It was just the AC side that was shit.
So in a nutshell, I hit the ‘walk’ and it won.
It was a shit show. In the supporting race on Saturday morning (5K), a woman next to me tripped on a screw that holds the boardwalk planks down. She went down hard on her knees. I helped her and said you have to be careful, a friend back in April, tripped on one of them and blew out her shoulder. Well about 300 meters later, I trip on one, hop on my right foot for about 7-8 feet laterally and could feel my left knee get tweaked. Half a mile later it feels ok. I want going fast. Texted my knee rest of the day. Sunday morning, everything that could have gone wrong - did!
Had to run to the bathroom (too much hydration) about 5 minutes before the start. I come out and the corral is packed. I can see my pace group but can’t get to them. I finally moved one of the barriers and hit next to 3:55. Decided that in the first mile I would just ease my way to them. Wronggggg . The first left turn off the boardwalk onto the street and I am on the inside and can’t move. No problem I will get pst this… but the time I passed Saints and Sinners AC there is just people who were in the ring starting position just stopping creating a wall. I am now next to the 4 hour group and i start to get away from them. My knee is giving me some pins but nothing bad. I catch up to 3:55 and stay with them. At this point I am now working my way through. Plan has been to make a decision to go no go by 7. I try to get into a flow. I go past 8 and I feel like I am in a groove and then it happened. I tripped over a screw and go down hard on my left side. That knee is not happy with me and neither is my hip and now they have another buddy who is just pissed at me, my left side around my ribs. I fell on my left and rolled over. I got up and it’s pin. I text my wife for why should I do. She responds back how are feeling; but then I had started to run again and it was not comfortable.
How did it go today (Marathon)? Unusually warm today in NJ which we know isn't ideal for running Marathons. Hopefully you did well!
Marathon on Sunday… I have never been so torn. Weather is supposed to be in the mid 60s/low 70s for the majority of the race. My training block didn’t go well. The high heat and humidity we had all summer wrecked my training as did my knee which hit out of whack in the spring when I amped my training. But… for once I feel ok going into the race. I gave up on BQing about 3 weeks ago. Plan is to go out with the 3:45 pace group and at mile 7 (~1:00:11 into the race) evaluate where my heart rate is at and how I feel and maybe try to break away and try to catch up with the 3:40 group before the turn around at mile 16 (you really need to be in a pack by mile 15 to avoid the winds as you approach the turn around.) Then I will just settle in and get through the backside of the course till mile 21 and then re-evaluate again when I get back on to the Boardwalk around mile 22.5. If it’s all good then try and pick up 15-25 seconds for the next 3 miles.
Plan A - 3:40 - 3:35
Plan B - 3:45
Plan C - sub 4 (and a new PR)
Plan D - enjoy the day and the course… :)
Way to get it done. Also, good to know
Ran a 5 mile race last weekend. Not bad for 57 years old and 96 degrees. FYI...hash run groups are usually full of swingers, if you want a LS friendly and fun team with which to run.
Not me but good luck to you!
